OT-ish: What's going on with Deadline

To date, he has been helped by legacy projects, some of which — Ghostbusters notwithstanding — contributed to the studio’s recent profitability. Such was the case with The Magnificent Seven, an Antoine Fuqua-directed Western starring Denzel Washington that unexpectedly broke through the September box office doldrums with a $35 million opening, and more than $100 million in worldwide ticket sales to date.

^ yeah, Penske is in charge now, we all know that.

And the point has been raised before at this very board.

But seriously: "broke through the [any] box office doldrums"?

Forgive the cheesiness, but IMHO if this particular sentence sucked any (and anything) more - Dyson would sue.

I haven't benn usind DD as a reference or resource for quite some time now (am not a frequent reader these days either) - is this their level these days?

Like mojo they've always played favorites (both sites stuck with the fantasy that Green Zone only cost $85m so wasn't doing badly at all and ommitted it from their roundups of the biggest flops of the year, for example, while Deadline must be the only source that still thinks DC's film output is not only truly great filmmaking but, no matter how many times the films fall short, going to do even better at the box-office than the studio hopes), but it does seem that since Nikki Finke left they've really been more reliant on corporate press releases and phoners with execs than insiders cutting through the BS.

They're good for the early numbers and deals, but their analysis has sucked for quite some time. If it's a studio they have good relations with the top execs, a $35m opening is a triumph, if it's an indie they haven't cultivated it's a disaster. It's like a Chinese restaurant that does great special fried rice but is hit and miss with all the other dishes on the menu so you end up taking the rice from them and the main course from that other restaurant down the road that takes too long cooking the rice but gets most of the rest of the menu right.

Damn, now I feel like ordering in for some reason and everywhere's closed now...

Good summary as always Trev, thank you (don't get too flattered though - I reckon sometimes you're being too damn hard on some'o'em boys 'round here *spits in a jar*).

Also now Ifeel like some fried rice. And I'll be damned if there's any within 5km(or miles) from my current place.

I read that in Clint Eastwood's voice.

Also, off-topic, I'm looking for a website that does box office analysis. Of course there's Mojo and Deadline, but if Deadline is biased, can anyone recommend a site less biased or any decent alternatives?

Skipping page long posts for over a year now.

"Aclea... I don't want any more trouble like you had last month in the Ghostbustresses thread. You understand? That's my policy."

"Yeah, well, when an adult troll is chasing a regular with intent to commit stupidity, I shoot down the bastard - that's my policy."

"Intent? How'd you establish that?"

"When a naked troll is chasing a woman through a dark thread with a spurious argument and an urban myth, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross."

I was also curious about that one, from what I have seen deadline is the best.

According to most producer/studio runner interview (they would be biased and probably have personal issue), the press surrounding movie financial performance tend to be pretty bad, it was terrible before and now better, but still pretty bad.

Try to find how much studio make from the average well performing movie on home video on Netflix or DirectTV.... or have any analysis that take ancillary market performance into account (the things we cannot do easily ourself..)

Well, that's the most non-OT quasi-OT query I have ever witnessed.

As far as I'm concerned - there is no "one window service" on this. Deadline was pretty great in Finke days. Now - after a small appraisal - it isn't half-bad either if you cut out occasional suck-ups (like the one I put as an example in my OG post).

BOM is solid if we consider the day - but I kinda miss Brandon Gray/Scott Stuber/Scott Holleran Days. Also Ray Subers of course. He often shot like he was drunk (case in point http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4052&p=s.htm) but always provided an enjoyable and informative read.

In my opinion, the best analysis is here + Deadline + BO + other sources if you have the time (consider other forums - BO.com included cause I don't frequent them. Blend it - then discuss if if one wishes to.

Otherwise - id still go with Deadline. They're fast, to the point and efficient. Their blow-jobby tendencies of late don't hurt if you know the topic (you do).

Edited for a consufing auto-correct typo
