Fox's 3rd Wolverine film is called "Logan" and will be R rated...

Anyone think that may hurt the film's chances, even by a slight margin, at the box office?

To not have either 'X-Men' or the "superhero name" of the character in the film, and to make the switch from the 'everyone allowed' PG-13 rating to the more exclusive R rating....

I think they could be limiting the box office potential of the film, even if it is by a fairly small number.

Yes, we all know how monstrous Deadpool was, it was well deserved. But the X-Men films, and to a greater extent the Wolverine films, have been far from what Deadpool was at the box office, even with a PG-13 rating. I think the switches being made for the 3rd/final Wolverine film will only limit its audience a little bit, not expand it.

Is it to distance themselve from the bad wolverine movies reputation (specially Origins) in a certain way, making it clear that it will be really different. And to make it clear that you do not need to have seen any x-men movie before, to remove that resistance ?

When a movie franchise has a lot of tittle, the resistance become bigger and bigger for any new audience to get in, a title that sound like a one off movie while having Jackman in the marketing could work.

If you really go for adults, it is not a bad thing to remove connection to superheroes.

The R rating has been known for many months now (since before Apocalypse came out and the filmmakers claim it was planned before Deadpool released as well), and since The Wolverine had no X-Men name tie-in, didn't expect this to either so those are not new questions. But the R rating probably limits the audience, though I understand like Deadpool it will have a lower level budget, and I think this is about Mangold and Jackman wanting to do an R rated version of the character for their final film rather than making the most money.

I don't think the rating will hurt the film at all. It should end up somewhere between Origins and Wolverine. The rating and title change are working towards making this stand out as something different that the rest of the pg13 cbm.

Recently the movies that shed the complacency of pg13 formulaic movies have done well. From Guardians to Deadpool to Suicide Squad, the movies that show a little variance have performed.

After 9 movie appearances, wolverine like Batman can open a movie without specifically having his name in the title.

God I just hope its good! I want Hugh Jackman to go out on top with his role of Wolverine (his other two solo films weren't so hot lol). Hopefully Logan will be a good send off for Mr Jackman.

I do agree calling it "Logan" is a bit risky. They could have had a cool marketing campaign by just calling it Wolverine III (and the posters would have been badass with his three claws symbolizing the third film) but thats just me.

They literally did that exact same poster design with the three claws for the third film for X-Men: The Last Stand (which actually doesn't have a "3" in the title either) so it would be redundant.

Besides I think Mangold is separating his films from X-Men: Origins Wolverine so he would never go with Wolverine 3, and other possible titles I heard were Weapon X and simply Wolverine (dropping "The" from the last film), so I like Logan the most of those.

My guess is it'll roughly as well as wolverine '13, ~400m, which would be good considering the rating and exchange rates.

and to make the switch from the 'everyone allowed' PG-13 rating to the more exclusive R rating.... Honestly, I don't think parent's are as stingy about taking their children to see R-rated super hero movies anymore. When I saw Deadpool, half of the audience was parents with children. And, considering Wolverine is one of the most popular super heroes ever (especially with children) I doubt an R-rating will really deter parents from bringing children.

However, Deadpool's probably an outlier as it was incredibly hyped and was well received. X-Men movies aren't typically very hyped and the majority didn't have the kind of reception that Deadpool had. All Logan has to do to make more money than the average X-Men movie is be really good. It should be able to make around $200m if it is.

gotcha. wasn't aware of that .
