"Arrival" predictions thread

Well, i'm pretty bad at making BO predictions. All I can say is I hope this movie a)is as good as it's trailer b) has a relative critic/box-office success since I've been following Denis Villeneuve carreer for a long time now.

Here's the international trailer :

And the US trailer :

Just for the sake of launching the discussion I'll say:

40M$ OW
120M$ Domestic
380M$ WW

Your toughts?

reply

15-20m OW
60m Domestic
110m WW

Yeah you are probably right
I think I was just being over-optimistic

The autumn sci-fi movie release has a really good track record Gravity, Interstellar, Martian, that one should open much lower and is hard to predict, it can go really well, it has not much minimum of how low it can get if it get bad reviews.

Villeneuve has yet to do a bad feature film, so it should be good, but I would be much more at ease if it was with Deakins, Prisoner, Sicario, Untitled Blade Runner Sequel did he skip Arrival collaboration to do Hail Ceasar ?

did he skip Arrival collaboration to do Hail Ceasar ?

This is my best guess : a simple conflict of schedules.

36 reviews in on Rotten Tomatoes, all positive, average rating of 8.5/10. Critical adoration can only help its prospects.

I think it will perform decent enough as counter programming for original adult content that is wedged between some relatively big early winter/late fall blockbusters. It might be Denis's biggest hit since Prisoners. 380M seems a bit fetching (even for WW), but audiences may be growing tiresome of comic book during this time of the year.

I'm surprised that no-one's noted the similarities to this very low budget Italian number:

- in which a translator of Hong Kong movies is sent to translate for a visitor who only speaks Chinese (because it's the most spoken language on the planet) to ascertain if he's come in peace or to herald an invasion.
