I always trouble to come up with a top ten because there are so many contenders, but my top 5 are pretty definitive. Ordered by year of release:

The Big Parade (1925)
Carousel (1956)
Imitation of Life (1959)
Walkabout (1971)
Don't Look Now (1973)

I also can't really condense it down to 10 films, but some of my favorites include:

Casablanca (1942)
West Side Story (1961)
Grease (1978)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
E.T. The Extraterrestrial (1982)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Stand by Me (1986)
The Harry Potter series (2001 - 2011)

Not a '10 favourite' (in all honesty - couldn't have been able to decide even if I tried), but ones I love and consider to have influenced my tastes (e.g. I love 'The Rock' too - and believe Bay in general will be studied and considered an auteur some day):\

* Apocalypse Now (definitely my favorite movie. the only safe pick for "the 10")

* Long Goodbye

* The Battle of Algiers

* The Rules of the Game

* Die Hard

* Letter Never Sent (1960)

* Cold Summer of 1953 (1988)

* Knockin' on Heaven's Door (looks like pure cheese now - but the one that influenced me greatly when I was younger. Still admire it)

* Brief Encounter (1945)

* Stalker

* Dzhentlmeny udachi (1971)

You are asking a thankless task, since many fans of movies here, should have put several movies (dozens and dozens) as favorites, they have to put in a small top 10 of the best films ever. At some point in my life, I can confirm some films that mark me more than others. This is not to say much, but can mean something emotionally. Because many films that I liked in the past, I do not like today, and the opposite is also applicable.
But I will put some (I remember) that marked me more than others.

1- Lord of Rings the Trilogy (Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King), 2001-2003
2- Wall-E 2008
3- Titanic 1997
4- Blade Runner 1982
5- Terminator tied w/ Terminator 2
6- L.A. Confidential
7- Back to the Future
8- Pulp Fiction
9- Magnolia (1999)
10- The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966)
