Is Chris Pratt really a box office star

or just the luckiest guy of his generation to win leads in Guardians of Galaxy (a huge surprise hit) and Jurassic World (which his role could have been played by anyone and not a difference it would have made).

Sample size is really low if you don't go for decades of released and franchise blockbuster make any evaluation muddy at best, those are always multi variable and reasons for their success.

They have giant marketing, commercial high concept, big effect in the trailers, franchise recognition, and usually all of those are bigger draw than actors, any actor.

That said, both guardian and Jurassic world massively overperformed, so the answer is maybe at the moment.

Magnificent 7 and passenger will double is sample size and could help judge better.

Lot of luck, but probably a good talent to pursue good material, he did skip on uncharted from the Sony leak and that sound like it was a wise choice, he played in a impressive list of movies before those 2, moneyball, zero dark thirty, her, was attach to American sniper for a while (but WB would only do it if Cooper played the lead according to Wikipedia)

Looks like it at this point.

Magnificent 7 and Passengers will really test his mettle.

Can't tell until he headlines non-franchise movies.

I disagree about Jurassic World. Yes, a comparably charismatic and likable star would have resulted in the same gross but not just anyone. A likable lead really helped attract more eyeballs. It would have been a hit regardless, but Pratt's presence helped make it a monster hit.

He's a very recognizable face, but I can't say he's a box office star. No one can say that he's the sole reason people would go see a movie (in fact you can't really say that about anyone anymore) but you especially can't say it about him. Having said that, I think 10+ years ago, he definitely would be.

He's a very recognizable face, but I can't say he's a box office starYe that would be my opinion too. I mean sure he put some butts in the seats of GotG and JP4 but enough to be called a box office star, doubtful. I know I personally went to gotg a 2nd time mainly bc of his charm, so at least one :)

Btw I disagree about the whole media induced storyline about stars not being important any more. When I did the stats on it they are as important as ever. The difference is that sequels are nowadays even MORE important (partly bc of growth of overseas where sequels often grow with each installment). For original movies stars matter as much as they ever did. And huge box office stars of the past always (ok not Cruise) had misfires, just like they do today.

I'd say only DiCaprio is a superduper star at the moment though on the level of prime Cruise, Murphy, Carrey, Roberts, Hanks etc.
