'Tarzan' "triumphs" over 'Star Trek Beyond': what happend?

'The Legend of Tarzan's current worldwide gross stands at 356 million

while

'Star Trek Beyond' is now at 318 million worldwide.

How was this possible? 'Tarzan's reviews were lukewarm to downright bad, while 'Beyond' had generally good to very good reviews and is part of an "established" franchise. Did something go wrong with 'Beyond's marketing? Both films will probably end up with approximately the same gross ('Beyond' is still to open in Japan) and both had almost the same production budget - were critics all wrong about 'Tarzan' and audiences liked it better after all, or did the "children factor" give it a slight edge over 'Beyond'?

For what is worth,Tarzan seems to have a much better word of mouth that RT is suggesting.Maybe that helped.

because even in 2016, there is still an audience out there for an old fashioned adventure film.

the problem is though is the budget was so big that even though it overperformed it didn't make a profit.

Not to mention that Tarzan still is somewhat well known and liked charcater. A lot of people have seen different iterations of him, be it the Disney animation or some old movie or TV series.

Star Trek on the other hand has never really managed to escape its "for nerds only" stigma, despite for a moment it looked like it.

Tarzan was surprisingly enjoyable. Better than the critics said but Beyond basically was crippled by a bad release date and bad marketing.

True. And I believe Tarzan played better with the female demographic than Trek which is probably also true with families/kids.

Beyond had an uphill battle: Coming off of Into Darkness (which didn't bode well with general audience repeat viewings). Also, their entire marketing campaign was dreadful.

I don't shut up, I grow up, and when I look at you, I throw up, Aghhh!

I was pleasantly surprised by Tarzan , Beyond was another disappointing outing from the Trek reboot.

Tarzan is a fairly enjoyable old fashioned adventure story. STB is a bit of a mess, with awful marketing and a lot of hostility from fans over Paramount closing down fan films.
