Depends on the budget and actual film quality. If it's more akin to "Alice Through The Looking Glass" in both regards, especially in quality, then yeah, there's a strong chance it'll fall on its face.
However, Ava DuVernay is no slouch at directing, and has a good track record, so let's wait and see.
"Lives with no meaning go straight past you, like trains that don’t stop at your station."
This is probably going to be a disaster.
1. It has a $100 million budget.
2. The book is unknown outside the US. It's not an action movie. It has no real stars and a mainly black cast which will limit its appeal even more overseas.
3. The Director has directed one film Selma which was received very well by critics but only made $68 million WW. I expect her film version of this to get good reviews as well since critics like her but that didn't help Pete's Dragon or BFG from bombing and this film is in the same vein.
4. Fans of the book of which there may be few anyway may not react well to the race changes made to it.
5. Straight Outta Compton is the highest grossing black directed film and it only made $201 million WW. If this film did that it would be just enough to cover the budget but I doubt this will have the appeal of that film which dealt with a popular subject matter (Rap.NWA).
