I totally agree with you.
As I grew up listening to Mr Mario Lanza's music, (my mom was a major fan and a trained singer), I feel
that his talent was somewhat underrated by everyone; including Mr Lanza himself. I had the feeling that he took his gift for granted and ultimately needed decent management and discipline.
His major mistake was to go into films, instead of the Met, and the opera circuit. He would have had the respect that he deserved on the great stage.
Politically incorrect Hollywood ruined his career. They really did not utilize his talents properly and cast him in so-so productions. He was constantly struggling with his weight and that is the kiss of death in films. He would not have had this problem at the Met, La Scala, etc.. As to the studios, not only was he fighting with his weight and crash dieting(ruining his health), but to make overtime money for the production crew; Mr Lanza was known to ruin a take in order to do a reshoot. The crew was happy the producers were not. He did not really realize that the shoot budget is everything.
I am not certain exactly what happened with his contract, but at one point there were conflicts with the studio (MGM) and his record deals.
Mario Lanza had many problems with Dore Schary and Louis B Mayer. I just find it amazing how some actors can get away with anything, and others are labeled as difficult and are ruined.
Mario Lanza was an extremely talented, generous and tragic man.
His bio., if done properly, as a history piece would make a great film.
