Don't you just love it when...

...you watch a film biography or something about an obviously historical character or event, then at the end you see the fine-print paragraph that says:

"All characters and incidents depicted in this photoplay are fictitious. Any resemblance between the characters and events depicted in this film and real persons is purely coincidental."

Sure I'm depressed, but I don't let it get me down.

Or the phrase "INSPIRED by real events". What does that mean, really?

reply

...that some of these fact-based movies may not really be based on very much FACT. (Personally, I think they just make some of it up!)

Sure I'm depressed, but I don't let it get me down.

That's exactly how I felt when I saw Panther by Mario Van Peebles. They had a really strong caveat at the beginning.

You are very unlikely to see this particular disclaimer at the end of a biopic of a real life figure...what would be the point of making a boopic if you're going to make everything up? The kind of disclaime you might see at the end of a biopic might say something to the effect that certain characters and events depicted were altered for dramatic purposes, but no one is going to make a biography of anyone snd then at the end inform you that everything in the film was made up.

reply

You know, they usually say stuff like:

"Although this film is based on actual events, some incidents and situations were fictionalized." or something similar to that.

reply

The purpose of the disclaimers is to avoid potential lawsuits that could be brought about by survivors, family members, descendents, friends, etc.
