Is it normal for cats to just live on eating pet treats rather than eating cat food?

Lately my mom and I have noticed that our cat perfers eating pet treats to eating cat food and I don't know if this is a habit cats have? When Mom and I try to get him to eat his cat food our cat only licks the gravy off the meat and only takes about three bites of cat food and then it just sits there and when Mom and I try to offer him cat food my cat shows no interest in it at all. My cat is very healthy and has had no illnesses. I'm also wondering if cats eat too much cat treats he will get sick
Is this common with cats?

MY CAT GWEN GOT PICKY THAT WAY THE SECOND HALF OF HER LIFE..SHE ATE TREATS ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY...SHE GOT VERY FAT BUT OTHER THAN THAT SHE WAS TOTALLY HEALTHY.LIVED A LONG HAPPY 16 YEARS.

Mom and I have been thinking about changing our cat's cat food and we usually buy him Friskies Savory Pates and Sheba Pates but when we bought him Whiskas Temptations cat treats that's all he eats. Would my cat show interest in cat food if we try different brands of cat food in his diet?

THATS THE ONE...TEMPTATIONS...LMAO...THE ONLY WAY I COULD GET GWEN TO EAT ANYTHING ELSE WAS WITHHOLDING THE TEMPTATIONS TILL SHE WAS HUNGRY ENOUGH TO EAT SOMETHING ELSE.

Mom and I are gonna try Iams cat food on my cat and see if he will eat it. I've never seen a cat live on nothing but cat treats which is a surprise to me because our previous cats never used to do this with their cat food. But my cat does love Meow Mix when he's in the mood to eat cat food

Mom and I tried Iams cat food on my cat and he ate almost the whole thing but then he went back to eating his cat treats afterward. Mom also tried putting his dry cat food in a cat feeding dish but then he plays with it rather than eating it and Mom tried mixing his cat food together and he seemed to like it. But I seem to think that my cat needs a bigger feeding dish because his head is getting too small to fit in it when my cat eats. Could this also be the reason why my cat has lost interest in cat food and is obsessed with cat treats?
