Bringing Dogs to the Pet Store

Just a little rant...

Over the weekend I was at the pet store to pick up some food for our dog. They had a dog adoption event going on, so there were a lot of dogs.

Customers also had their dogs, but the dog that I was closest too was clearly not trained to be around so many people and dogs. There was all this awful barking between him and some of the dogs up for adoption. Luckily they were on leashes.

This is not the first time I have seen a dog get aggressive while his owner is trying to pick up supplies or pay for their order.

Why do people bring their dogs to the store? Especially when they are not trained to be around so many distractions.

It worries me that the pet or a customer will get bit or injured.

People should train their pets to behave well around others before they bring them into public places. I completely agree. A calm, relaxed dog is more fun to be around. I'm a dog person but morals need to be in place too.

I agree that proper training is necessary. I see so many irresponsible pet owners. I am not perfect, but I feel that when it comes to our dog being around others, I am responsible with her.

People also forget that dogs are animals, and can be set off by some element that could cause them to bite or attack. Our dog has never been aggressive, but when she saw a stray cat in our yard, she flipped out. I had her on her leash, but who knows why she had that reaction when she pays no mind to other dogs, squirrels, etc.

When strange people walk up to us and say, "Can we say hi? Our dog is very nice!" I politely decline. I don't know them or their dogs, and since we have had a few dog attacks in the neighborhood, I would rather be safe than sorry.

True, but I have seen the same interaction between customers' dogs on other occasions without adoptable dogs around.

Dear lifelikeweeds:

People do what they want without thinking; unfortunately, the animals suffer for it.

A lot of people bring them to pet stores so they can get better interactions with other dogs. They may be barking now, but this is all part of their training. Soon they will be used to other dogs and won't bark anymore.

My biggest issue are the retractable leashes in dog stores!

Anyway, I live with (2) very high maintenance dogs. They both went through training and at the end, the trainer told me they would be better off not being around other dogs. The issue is when they are on the leash, they become over-protective of me. Anyway, I only bring them to the store to get their nails trimmed and sometimes holiday pictures.

People definitely need to be more aware of what their dogs are doing out in public.

Have a nice day!
