For Kiya..my good dog and friend...

So sorry for your loss jodilyn, I lost my bird on Oct. 22nd (a cardinal), I had him for 29 1/2 years. Its very heartbreaking to lose a pet.

That is so true! It broke my heart! Our pets give us love unconditionally and my little guy was my rock in that way. The other family members enjoyed him but I truly loved him. He was the one I talked to when I couldn't express what I was feeling to anyone else. I think what hurt was not having any warning. He was fine in the morning and then had a trachea collapse. By the afternoon, he was gone. I held him as he passed!

It leaves a big hole doesn't it!

That hole in your heart will always be there, it never goes away but in time, you will be able to deal with it. I'm 65 and I have many little "holes in my heart",
Was you dog a very small breed? They seem more prone to have a trachea collapse. At least you were able to comfort him at the end. You brought each other a lot of joy in your lives. One day you will be able to smile again when you think of him but it takes a long time.

Yes, he was a small breed. He was a pure bred Miniature American Eskimo. While I had researched his breed when I got him, I hadn't heard of the trachea collapse until the vet pointed it out.

This was a really nice little post. My Mother right now is struggling with end of life needs for her 14 yr old lab Daisy. Mom has went above and beyond for Daisy. I can only hope that Daisy's last days are full of peace and love.

It's not easy to let a dear pet go but as in the case with my little guy and now with Daisy, the relief from their discomfort and pain overwhelms the need to have them stay with us. It really is hard though because our much loved pets are family members too. I sympathize with your Mom and with you.

The love and care your Mom gave Daisy throughout her life will help your Mom deal with the grief. My thoughts are with you both.
