Sunday Dinner, December 4

I checked a few pages of threads and didn't see one for today, so i started a new one. Sorry if the Sunday dinner page is past page 5 on this board.

I made a beef stew. Usually i make pot roast but wanted something different. It came out really good. I haven't made beef stew in ages.

I could've also posted this under the $core! thread because i got a great deal on beef this weekend. Has anyone tried 7-bone chuck steak? It's fabulous! There aren't 7 bones in it, there's one bone shaped like a #7. The flavor is great. It's also good for steak, especially on the grill. It's a bit fatty, so if grilling it stays moist, but if i'm making stew or pot roast i trim off most of the fat.

Since it's chuck, it's usually one of the cheaper cuts, like $3.50-ish per lb. But it was on sale for $1.99/lb!! I got two packages. The largest pieces i saved... one for a future pot roast and the other for a couple steaks. All the little bits and pieces went into the stew pot along with the bones.

I also added carrots, onion, potato, and mushrooms and a small can of unseasoned diced tomato. For spices/flavors i used a little chicken stock, some dried sage, some poultry seasoning, some garlic powder, and some flour to thicken it a little and make a thin gravy.

And then i served it over plain brown rice... yes! rice and potatoes! Total comfort food.

That sounds good! I just had leftover chicken pot pie and a slice of pumpkin pie with whipped cream. My cats also had whipped cream - they come running when they hear the can being shaken.

I love chicken pot pie! In fact i was saying to dad tonight that i might try making a chicken or turkey stew next, similar to pot pie only without the crust.

I miss mom's pumpkin (squash) pie, so one day i'll dig out that recipe and make one. But forgot to mention that i also made a grapenut custard for dessert. I absolutely love this and it's so easy to make.

I've had it in a restaurant but it's always way too sweet. Mom used to make custard pie but the crust was always soggy and no one ever ate it. Her recipe was really sweet too.

I googled for a recipe that was similar to mom's. I cut the amount of sugar in half and i like the grapenut layer much better than soggy pie crust.
