What Kind of Popcorn do you Like?

Do you like microwave, stove-top, or kernel corn heated in a kettle? And what's your favorite brand?

I'm asking because I've grown tired of microwave Popcorn, and I think I need some thats more satisfying, but I don't know a thing about "ketel corn."

Suggestions?

Over the last year I've started making my own popcorn on the stovetop, in a big stock pot, and I find it both easy and fun. I like being able to adjust the butter and salt levels to my taste. I haven't experimented much with other flavors, being a popcorn purist myself, but I'm told it's easy to add pretty much anything you like -- cheese, paprika, red pepper flakes, sugar, whatever.

Sounds good. What kind/ brand of kernel corn do you prefer?

I liked my 'hot air' popper, but it finally died on me. Now if I want popcorn I use PopSecret Homestyle microwave popcorn.

Uh huh, I think Pop Secret is the microwave style I've been using when I do make popcorn. Sometimes its fine, but sometimes I long for a more...I dunno...a more carnival/fresh from the circus taste from my popcorn.

Does that make sense? Do you know what I mean?

I do know what you mean about the carnival/circus taste. I only use the Homestyle version of PopSecret. Sometimes it's great and sometimes it's just not. 

I buy the pre-popped (in the chip aisle).

I don't like microwave popcorn at all. Too greasy and salty, plus it has that funny smell and aftertasted.

Stove top is good but too greasy and i don't like to have to clean up the pan. I only eat a small bowl at a time so it makes sense not to have to make a mess for just a little for myself.

Air pop is too boring unless you add melted butter.

I used to buy a brand called Boston made by the Hain company. Either they stopped making it or it's not sold in my area (ironically the Boston area) anymore. I've tried other brands. My new favorite is Skinny Pop. Great flavor, not too greasy or salty. My store brand is also good, but is my second choice.

The worst brand i've ever eaten was Wise. It's like eating a mouthful of salt. I bought a bag once, too a few bites and threw it all away. It was inedible.

Every so often i will treat myself to some caramel corn. Not kettle corn which is everywhere and very trendy, but the good old fashioned buttery caramel corn. There is no national brand that i know of. Boston popcorn used to have a caramel variety but they discontinued that years ago. It's actually a good thing because i was eating way too much of it. Now i discovered my supermarket has their own brand of caramel corn and i will buy a small container of that occasionally and then ration it out to myself a little at a time. The store has a popcorn machine in their prepared food area which is next to the registers. So you're smelling hot, fresh popcorn while you shop and then it's right there when you leave. Genius marketing.

We buy the Orville Redenbacher's kernels, and pop them in a big pot. Heat the pot first, hit it with some oil, let it get hot, put in the kernels - a thin single layer - and move it over the burner. Once the popping slows down, remove pot, and let sit until no more kernels pop. Add salt and/or melted butter if you want.

I've gotten lazy in my old age, so I go to the easy to make microwave popcorn. I'll alternate the extra-butter type with the jalapeno-flavored type and the sweetish kettle type. All are good to us and are easy to make. 
