Nespresso by KitchenAid

Our family just received a very nice early Christmas present from a good friend. It's an Espresso machine and it's beautiful. It also comes with the little cups and I can't wait to try it tomorrow morning.

Since I've never used a machine like this before, any tips for me? And if you have one, do you like it?

Nespresso with the disposable coffee pods, yes?*

If so, I've used various brands a hundred times, jodilyn but in hotel rooms and restos only. They're all quite fool proof and thank goodness you get to experiment in the privacy of your home. My first time was with people lined up behind me and I pretended I knew what I was doing. πŸ˜‚

Not sure if you are supposed to clean with a vinegar solution or simply hot water but I'd run plain water (at least) through the system a few times. Speaking of water, remembering to fill the machine is step 1.

2 - Turn it on. Press the big button once.

3 - Lift the lid or handle to reveal where the pod needs to be inserted. This is where I got nervous the first time. Is it inserted flat or on its side? You'll see...it will fit only one way.

4 - Turn the dial to the desired cup level. Some only have one volume.

5 - Place the cup. I'd use a regular coffee cup the first few times to see how much each level produces.

6 - Hit the big button again and off she goes.

That's it.

Lift the handle to discard the empty coffee pod. Not sure where it goes as I've never had to empty the used pod container. The smaller ones in hotel rooms usually do not have said container and you simply remove and replace when making a new cup.

Nice gift indeed!πŸ‘

*If this is an espresso machine, well, then disregard all of the above!

Yes and the pods are very pretty. I almost don't want to open them..Lol!

Thank you for listing such easy instructions. The quick start card is informational but written in such small writing, I could hardly make out the words. That's what happens when you have to use reading glasses. ξ€Š

Now I'm really excited. Would you like a cup? β˜•

I don't mean to rain on your parade jodilyn, but I can't taste the difference between the various pods (if I drink them black). Last year, we also got a Nespresso machine for a gift and I might actually go back to a normal coffee maker.

I have to add sugar to bring out the flavor of the coffee pods, and to cut down on the acidity. I don't like that, since I'm trying not to consume additional sugar.

By now you've probably tried your first cup, maybe two. If so, did you taste a real difference between two coffee capsules?

reply

Sorry Jodes,

I also don't like to rain on your parade, butt these plastic coffee pods have been identified as one of the worst environmental marketing ideas ever, and there is a problem with disposal worldwide.

The differences are really subtle I have to admit. But then, I don't drink a lot of coffee so I'm okay with it. I'll tweak it to see how it goes. My daughter found a good site where you can refill the little pods with your own espresso coffee. She tried one in the pod and darned if it worked.

Oh and I kept the coffee maker and the coffee bean grinder on the kitchen counter also just in case. Thanks for the info. ξ€Ή

My daughter and I were concerned about the little pods also and did some investigation. The friend who gave us the espresso maker bought it knowing there's a recycling program for Canada and the U.S. There are drop off locations in Canada and while there aren't any drop off locations for the U.S., Nespresso (a division of Nestle) will send you recycling bags free of charge. When you get to 200 of the little cups, you seal the bag and take it to any U.P.S location to mail back to the company free of charge. I've already ordered quite a few bags.

I've also found a company which makes 99% biodegradable cups.

There's also 2 companies which will have 100% biodegradable cups soon.

Here's some info on recycling the cups..

Thanks Gozzie for mentioning the recycling. I hope you and your family are well. ξ€₯

Great news, Jodes about the recycling.

We are well here and I am looking forward to an exciting year next year when I walk the Camino in Spain and visit one of my daughters and family in the UK for a month.

Best wishes to you and your family.
