Why Israel Bans AlJazeera & U.S. Bans TikTok

"What the two laws have in common is desire to silence Israel-Gaza war critics

Like Israel’s Al Jazeera ban, that law [against TikTok] relies on unsubstantiated assertions of national security concerns, ignoring Justice Hugo Black’s prescient warning in the Pentagon papers case that “the word ‘security’ is a broad, vague generality whose contours should not be invoked to abrogate the fundamental law embodied in the first amendment”.

Another thing the two laws have in common is that it’s an open secret that those concerns are pretexts for silencing the growing backlash against the Israel-Gaza war. Senator Mitt Romney essentially acknowledged as much in a recent conversation with Antony Blinken, the secretary of state. He wasn’t the first to say the quiet part out loud.

It doesn’t stop there. Biden also signed into law the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act (Risaa). That legislation allows the government to conscript any “service provider who has access to equipment that is being or may be used to transmit or store wire or electronic communications” to help it surveil foreign targets.

And that office could be a newsroom. Risaa is, after all, an amendment of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which had been abused to spy on journalists before Congress expanded it. It’s a safe bet foreign sources will hesitate to speak to US journalists if they think the newsroom may be bugged.

Another bill recently passed by the House of Representatives would give the secretary of the treasury unchecked power to revoke the tax exempt status of any non-profit – including non-profit news outlets – that the secretary deems a “terrorist-supporting organization”.

Some commentators have even called for the bill to be expanded to delist non-profits that meet the controversial International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. The definition, also recently adopted by the House, is widely criticized for conflating disparagement of Israel with antisemitism – a tactic also employed by proponents of the Al Jazeera ban.

That would give the US government far greater power to silence news outlets – at least increasingly common non-profit ones – than Benjamin Netanyahu could dream of.

Biden and many other Democrats constantly warn that Donald Trump would behave like an authoritarian in a potential second term. Yet they insist on continuing to hand him new powers to abuse, particularly against his favorite scapegoat: the press."

reply

Not sure who said it first, but "in war the truth dies first".

reply

Did you vote for Biden in 2020?

reply

They refuse to say where they're from. Probably not even able to vote for Biden.

reply

Yup, this is the third time I've asked but no answer; which indicates that the OP is not American.

reply

My question is, who's paying them to stir shit.

I can't imagine someone doing it just for shits and giggles.

reply

Their regime is funding or incentivizing them; otherwise, they’re mentally ill idiots doing it for free.

reply

Perhaps Keelai is an expat, but he's participated in many discussions here that have demonstrated he's at least from the US, specifically the East Coast. I recall one in particular when he was talking about forming groups of neighbors to welcome minorities that moved into his majority white area or something along those lines.

reply

ROTFLMAO
Don't confuse your delusions with reality.

reply

On what, Keelai? Do tell.

I'd waste my time pulling up the thread I referred to but we both know I'd get another comment similar to above, at best.

reply

Pull up or shut up!

reply

Again, I'm not digging through your 1000's of posts to find that when you'll almost certainly not reply or at best respond with a one liner such as above. In regards to you being from the US:

"[–] Keelai (35430) a month ago
Zero. I may skip this year. Their rush to begin Christmas season before Halloween has made me very, very very mad 😠. Very!"

reply

I always said I was American, Einstein. It's the other nonsense in your comment that's part of your delusions.

reply

And yet I'm the only one here that claimed you are from the US with all of the regulars saying you aren't, genius. Apparently it wasn't so apparent.

This is why your friends here are few, Keelai. You took me defending you against those gaslighting claims as the only post you responded to, and with hostility no less. Good luck with that.

reply

They're trolling. Don't feed them.

reply

I try not to. My intentions were good there, I promise.

reply

I always said I was American, Einstein.

So tell us who you voted for in 2020 and 2024.

reply

Settle a bet for me and Semi: He thinks you're a White male boomer, while I believe you're a heavyset woman of color. So, which one of us is correct?

reply

You crack me up.

reply

She/he won't answer. Lulz.

reply

Definitely not. I think Keelai enjoys keeping us all guessing. Shit, before this thread even tvfan who lives on the forums thought Keelai is from Europe or something.

reply

Woof Woof!

To be fair, I never inquired if you were human; I simply asked whether you were male or female, Black or White.

reply

Definitely an American. What I wonder is whether she — because I think she is a she — is a woman of color or a White liberal woman who feels it’s her duty to lecture everyone on behalf of the Black community. Right now, I’m leaning toward a heavy set woman of color.

reply

I'm still leaning towards a white, semi-retired male boomer with a lot of time and cheap wine to direct towards venting angst on these forums. Your guess is as good as mine though.

reply

Funny you should mention wine, because whenever I picture her as a White liberal woman, I can't help but imagine her drinking wine.

reply

That's funny that our assessment at least has that in common.

reply

We always seem to end up at the same juncture, don't we?

reply

Like minds and all, as everybody knows.

reply

:-)

reply

Keeliar is from elsewhere. I forget where or what the dipshit said that gave it away but it ain't from here. Probably a Chinabot propagandist.

reply

Since China has banned many USA websites, why shouldn't the US ban a Chinese one? Also, I don't think tiktok will be banned, at least not for months. A ban was threatened by Trump during his first term.

reply

"why shouldn't the US ban a Chinese one?"

Because the U.S. is a democratic country which believes in freedom instead of an authoritarian communist country with no freedom.

reply

Democracy is full of weaknesses.

reply

You prefer a Dictatorship in which one leader tells you how to live your life instead of the freedom to decide for yourself?

Can you lists the weaknesses of Democracy?

reply

I prefer to live in a prosperous country and democracy is not needed at all for prosperity. Freedom of speech for everyone, even for enemies of the people, and partisan strife are not things I value.

reply

The U.S. is the most prosperous country in the world and a democracy.

Freedom = Live and let live
I get the impression those afraid of freedom are really children in need of a parent running their lives. I prefer to make my own decisions and be in charge of my own life.

reply

So you admit the country created, developed, shaped and ruled by white supremacists is the most prosperous country. I disagree. There are undemocratic countries with higher quality of life: Qatar, UAE, China, Kuwait etc. Don’t overestimate democracy. Natural resources, population size and the quality (IQ, general mindset etc.) of the populace are more important parameters for determining a country's prosperity and position in the global arena. The dictatorial State of Saudi Arabia is very rich thanks to the sales of oil, while several democratic EU Member States are comparatively poor countries.

reply

Nonsense! The U.S. has the world's strongest economy, strongest military and rules inventions and innovations.

reply

Starting a comment or sentence with "Nonsense!" just shows you waste your entire life bickering over BS about something you have no clue about with someone you don't know.

reply

Obviously, you can't disagree with my comment.

reply

Obviously you cannot read, and you are wasting my time.

reply

You butted in. You wasted your own time.

reply

The US has the highest national debt. In fact Western democracies, e.g. France, UK, Italy, (even Japan if considered a Western land) etc. share something: they are hugely indebted, unlike countries where people have no right to vote, e.g. Saudi Arabia, China etc. Russia too, considered to be a undemocratic country presents a low public debt.

reply

There would be less national debt if Trump and Republicans would stop giving billionaires huge tax cuts.

Russia repeatedly stole life savings and pensions from their own citizens repeatedly bankrupting them. I know people who fled from there penniless and had to start over from scratch.

Not too many people want to live in any of those countries that you named. People vote with their feet.

None of the countries you named has a higher standard of living for most people. Authoritarian governments don't need to listen or help their people and they normally shutdown all dissent. They don't have to spend money on citizens.

Democratic countries need to listen to their citizens since politicians rely on votes and support.

And the U.S. has the world's strongest economy, strongest military and rules inventions and innovations!!!

reply

Yes, they have a higher standard of living: much less debt per capita, much less crime rates, better more humane health system.

Many people want to live in the undemocratic countries I mentioned. That's why so many migrants choose Qatar and UAE and now even Saudi Arabia, a land that is becoming increasingly more open to the world.

Democratic governments don’t give a toss about their citizens. It is an illusion that popular vote matters. Right to vote is the opium of the (UNEQUAL) people. They give you a 'right' in order for them to lullaby you and think that you have power through that so-called 'right'.

reply

Half the U.S. is ruin by fascist-loving Republicans/Trumpites who promote guns and crime, poverty, voter suppression, debt to give billionaires tax cuts, defunding healthcare.

I'll assume you're in an area or county ruined by Republicans/Trumpites policies which explains your bitterness toward the U.S.. I suggest you move to a blue county.

Meanwhile, your shitty authoritarian countries have a low standard of living. Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland and other strong democracies (not ruin by pubs) have a much higher standard of living and people prefer to live in them.

Migrants prefer democracies.

Go to your beloved Saudi Arabia or Russia and publicly say the leader is an A-hole. I dare you!

reply

As I said before, Qatar and UAE are undemocratic lands with high standard of living, with many migrants and happy people. Meanwhile, living standards in many democracies have dropped because of much immigration, like in Sweden and Denmark.
Also, the fact that you can publicly (on social media and to a lesser extent in the press) and without punishment insult the leader of a democracy does not mean that you bring a change to something. Your voice doesn’t have power. It is money that determines winners in democracies. If a very rich man (e.g. Jeff Bezos or Larry Page) or group of millionaires would fund the Green or Libertarian Party, you'd notice that that party would win a few seats in the Senate or in a chamber. Now it doesn’t win any seat despite the hundreds of thousands of members. In democracy, candidates need $$$$ for promotion, campaigns and to buy votes and these are that win.

reply

Why aren't you living in Qatar and UAE? How happy are the women? Don't confuse the U.S. with how elections are done in other democracies. For instance, France has strong election finance laws. Many political campaigns are run on little or no money.

"Migrant workers in Qatar who helped to make the 2022 World Cup possible continued to face serious abuses, including unexplained deaths, injuries, unpaid wages, and exorbitant recruitment fees, despite labor reforms."
https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2023/country-chapters/qatar

"Women in Qatar must obtain permission from their male guardians to marry, study abroad on government scholarships, work in many government jobs, travel abroad until certain ages, receive some forms of reproductive health care and to act as a child's primary guardian, even when they are divorced"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Qatar

Ditto UAE

reply

The women in Qatar and UAE are happy I guess, or at least happier and safer than those in the USA and most Western or democratic lands in general.

Many women in U.S. cities must obtain gun permission and carry a gun or another means of self-defense in order to be safe, are very indebted as they owe huge amounts of money in student loans, medical costs, rents, taxes etc. The freedom and the happiness provided by the tons of psychotic drugs they consume are an illusion. They live in a world of fake happiness.

reply

I don't think banning was the issue, they just want TikTok to be owned, or half-owned by America.

Interesting clip of what the Chinese are saying about the TikTok ban...

Does Instagram or Xhitter or whatnot censor Free Palestine content?

https://x.com/tonygoldmark/status/1881473791269953685

I see lots of content on Palestine on Xhitter.

reply

TikTok is being blamed for "indoctrinating" college students. There were a number of Republican and Democratic politicians complaining about them taking the side of Palestinians instead of siding with AIPAC aka: Israel because of TikTok.

I don't really do social media except MC and Youtube. I know there are Youtubers who complained about being censored. One guy was arrested in Britain on trumped up charges. In general, U.S. censors Palestinian content including the news. Some gets through of course, but the goal is to side with Israel since AIPAC gives millions to politicians. AIPAC spent millions defeating politicians who called for an end to the genocide. Most guests are Jewish or Israeli and reports are almost always from an Israeli viewpoint.

There are laws on the books that state you're not allowed to boycott Israeli products or say anything against Israel. You can lose government contracts if you run a private business. Those laws were requested by Israeli politicians to shutdown any dissent. The main way to change racist policy has always been through boycotts. Why are Americans forced to be loyal to Israel?

Students protested genocide and they were arrested and university professors fired.

I get a lot of Palestinian content from Middle East Monitor, Al Jazheera, Gazans like Bisan Owda who reports from Gaza and just won an Emmy, sympathetic Israelis like Gideon Levy and Ilan Pappe, some youtubers and plenty of books. I usually avoid X.

reply

> Why are Americans forced to be loyal to Israel?

Just because we elected a criminal President does not mean we support barbarian criminal nations. Why don't you rail about how much you love the policies of these societies like Iraq who today Drafted a law allowing 9-year-olds to marry, legalising child rape. Or Iran murdering girls for not covering themselves from head to toe.

You are sick person.

reply

U.S. is the barbarian criminal nation which has killed millions of innocent people around the world in order to enrich the military-industrial-complex.

reply

It's true to some extent, but it is nothing compared to the dead,
and the living dead Islam has wrought.

reply

Nonsense! U.S. has killed millions more. Ditto Christians who were responsible for the Holocaust.

reply

Silence the made up lies about Israel war crimes, like the apartheid that is not aparthied or the genocide that not a genocide. Meanwhile yesterday Arabs broke in to Israel and stabbed innocent civilians. They did not do enough in Gaza. They should push Hamas & Palestinians into Egypt and let Egypt support them and try to protect themselves from the barbarians.

"A consensus is emerging: Israel is committing genocide in Gaza."
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/dec/23/israel-gaza-war-genocide-where-is-the-action

"A consensus is building. On 5 December, Amnesty International concluded after an investigation that “Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip”. A few days later, the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) stated that after research and analysis, it concluded that “there is a legally sound argument that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza”.

A few days after that, Human Rights Watch (HRW) declared that “Israeli authorities are responsible for the crime against humanity of extermination and for acts of genocide”, and Médecins Sans Frontières reported that its medical “teams in the north of Gaza are seeing clear signs of ethnic cleansing”. Earlier in November, HRW also concluded that Israel’s actions in Gaza amounted to “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity”, and appeared to “also meet the definition of ethnic cleansing”."

Human Rights Organizations trump your Islamophobia.

reply

None of those links matters a bit. When the deans of Columbia
and other Universities allow blatant anti-semitism, and the UN
sponsors organizations like UNRWA that employs and supports
terrorists - and they do. Hostages were found to be being held
by them. Your lies are being outed and your brainwashed hate
crowds have brought hate and dishonest upon themselves - it
hardly matters that you can pretend to point to some lying nonsense.

Plus, just look all around your world, where they shoot non-Muslims,
even kill Muslims if they think they get a Jew at the same time, and
then justify it by saying any good Muslim will just get to paradise
sooner, as will the martyr that murders them ... and you spend years
defending that by posting lies.

You are just throwing your own life away because you know it is
worthless anyway.

It's not ethnic cleansing when there are 2 million Muslims who live
peacefully and productively in Israel itself, and it is not ethnic cleansing
any more than it is for the police to clear the streets of criminal scum
and put them in prison.

You cannot raise people in mental and human deprivation and use them
as soldiers or hostages or bombs and think that is going to work anymore.
The days that those kind of lies working are hundreds of years out of date.
The massive waste that is Islam pretending it is the system God intended
for the whole of humanity is a tragedy on an unimaginable scale, but it
is your tragedy.

reply

Nonsense! You sound radicalized.

Human Rights Organizations trump your Islamophobia and radicalization.

reply

Does ByteDance receive funding from the Chinese government? If not, the comparison to Al Jazeera is apples and oranges.

reply

Same thing. Both China and Israel are authoritarian governments without democracy and freedom.
