Michigan Budget Surplus
Governor Whitmer is proposing using the state’s record budget surplus to issue $180 checks to every tax filer in Michigan, totaling $800 million. This seems like a huge wasted opportunity to me. I mean, $180 just doesn’t seem like much money to get back.
The latest ASCE report card for Michigan’s infrastructure gave the state a grade of a D+. I think the $800 million would be better spent investing in new infrastructure for the communities that need it most. Why give the surplus away when there’s such a need for it?
I'm not from the state, but I’m curious if anyone here lives in Michigan and what their thoughts are.
