Longest serving Ex-PM was campaigning for Liberal Democrats (different than in the US) when he was shot from behind with a makeshift shotgun 2-3 times from a 3m distance. So far he's under cardiac arrest.

Of course, conservatives are jumping on this (politicizing this shooting! disgusting!) to point out that Japan has strict gun laws but it didn't prevent the shooting. Never mind that Japan has about ten shooting deaths a year in a country of over a hundred million. That's one of the things making this so shocking. Gun violence is very rare there.

It was a makeshift shotgun as well so he couldn't have obtained a weapon from the get go. Wonder how this will change how leaders are shown to the public. Maybe it's best they wear bulletproof vest underneath. There is high trust on the openness and trustworthiness of the public so I hope they don't start armoring up like US presidents do.

reply

You would have to wonder how they would let someone carrying that rig to get up that close to him.To polite of a country that thinks nothing will happen to them.

I've gotten close to famous people with no frisk or pat down. They're quite vulnerable. That's why Elvis would literally run for his life getting in his limo after a concert. He feared being shot.

reply

I am sure you weren't carrying a hand cannon like that guy was though.

reply

The point should be this big jump in violence....period! Using a gun or not shouldn't be the focus.

reply

He died unfortunately.

reply

It's not a pipe gun which uses shotgun shells. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Improvised_firearm#Pipe_guns

There is a picture on nypost. The pipes have electric ignition in the ends. Probably just powder and ball bearings in the pipe.
