The European Union says it is planning the “strongest, the harshest package” of sanctions it has ever considered at an emergency summit Thursday, as the Russian military attacked Ukraine.
This won't make any difference in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
I have heard about sanctions for my entire life, what are they and have they ever accomplished anything? we have had sanctions on cuba since JFK, and not much has changed since then.
Don't overthink it. Sanctions are just a way to negatively impact the target country economically. They're meant to put economic stress on a country and hopefully get them to respond in a certain way.
Asking if they work is kind of like asking do bombing runs work. They are meant to wear down a nation. Not nuke it in one shot.
Cuba has been disabled from trading and growing economically ... that is what has held it in a weak position, not that fact that it is whatever they call it, tyranny, socialist, communist ... the US stomps on a country and then says - see, their system is crap.
Similar dynamics with Russia ... though I have to wonder whose brilliant idea was it to make China into a massive single-race, despotic super power?
yeah, Cuba is weak and a non factor now, but overall we have only affected the people of Cuba, not the ruling elite.
I feel bad for the people because they have had nothing but oppression for at least 3 generations. Wish there was a way to resume trade and travel. we trade heavily with China and they are still a communist country.
As for China, could be a result of them making products for the entire world. we are continually shipping manufacturing to them, which just makes their economy stronger.
