"The more white people at a Chinese restaurant, the worse the quality/taste of the food is."

I'm not even going to bother asking what you think of this statement, because I know what the response will be from most who frequent this board....(but I still wanna know.)

I admit I think I heard this saying from a person of color. As an Asian-American myself I don't think the statement has any validity (many of the Chinese restaurants which have tasty food happen to also have many white customers within their diverse clientele - however I'm not the best person to judge, as I'm not Chinese myself, nor am I the ultimate judge in quality.) However, I still consider the statement harmless and in good fun, poking fun at stereotypes of white people.

reply

Just one POC or several? I never heard of a POC ever saying this in my lifetime. Everyone just goes about their day and life unless there are people out to make trouble.

reply

I think one person. But I think a common white stereotype is that foods associated with them are bland (i.e. white bread.)

reply

I LOVE WHITE BREAD. It's just so soft. I know whole wheat/brown bread is better because it has all the oats and wheat essentials stuff but now they incorporate it into white bread as well.

This is my favorite bread with flour topping. Thick, soft, tasty, add some nutella and dear goodness. Wonderbread is also good. My favorite favorite is the Asian bread that uses butter. Soo soft and tasty.

reply

Brown bread is healthier but white bread makes better toast.

I think what that comment means is this: The more non-Asians are in a Chinese restaurant, the more likely the taste has been modified for a western palate, which means that is unauthentic and too far from how Asians would like it.

To be honest I don't think you are a "real" Asian if you don't know this.

reply

Like I said before, I've lived all my life in Los Angeles and I'm white, and my parents took us to Chinese restaurants in the 1970's, they were everywhere, even in the suburbs.

I had a buddy in high school, we were both 16, and he had NEVER eaten Chinese food before (we're talking 1980's now) I think maybe his grandparents had moved to California from Minnesota, and his parents were Baby Boomers. My parents were Greatest Generation and had come to California from New York and Chicago.

reply

All the Asian places in my town have browns in the kitchen. The wait staff is Asian to give the place credibility. The food might taste different as the people leave and new hires come on.

reply

Brown could be American mixed race, Arab, Indian, people who don't wash their face.

reply

They are Latino's

reply

I almost spit out my coffee - you woke now? "Latinos?' Que paso con "Beaners?"

The Chinese restaurants in white neighborhoods are usually high class.

The chinese restaurants In black neighborhoods serve dog.

The quality couldn't be more different.
The Chinese go out of their way to serve subpar meet to the race that bullies them. And some still love the taste.

reply

The race that bullied them? You are obviously referring to the Whites who went to war with the Chinese, colonised part of their land (Hong Kong), forced them to build their railways and blame them for Covid-19.

reply

No I am talking about the people killing them and assaulting them presently. In ny blacks have a great distain for the Chinese.

Chinese are also very poor when they arrive in ny....have to live in the poor areas, but they always work hard and keep family close knit. If they felt bullied by Americans they would not ditch their home lands and want to come to America

This angers others who are in similar situations but abandon the family unit and choose crime over career.. because in America its taught that people in certain situations are allowed to act out.
Given a pass for bad behavior because of their environment.

But back on subject, I would.be very weary if I were black and buying Chinese food in ny today.
They have different meats for certain people. If they dont know any better, enjoy the taste. No harm ,.no fail.

"No harm ,.no fail."

No harm no FOWL.

"because in America its taught that people in certain situations are allowed to act out."

What "certain people" are you referring to?

reply

I'm white and I've been to a Chinese wedding and a Chinese "funeral" and the stuff they eat at those receptions is... strange to me.

There are a lot of Chinese/Taiwanese in Los Angeles and I'm always surprised when I go to Panda Express or one of the other franchises to see Asians. Of course the only time I go there is when I get a good coupon - maybe that's why the Asians are there too. They love the coupons. Respect.

I prefer Thai food over Chinese food.

reply

Well, I think the "strange" food at the Chinese events could be explained by the fact that Chinese restaurants have different menus for Chinese-speaking and non-Chinese-speaking people.

reply

Sometimes I try and order something different and they tell me no. Only chinese like...

Ok, pint of pork fired rice

reply

This phrase is very accurate.

Long ago a Mexican coworker told me that to find the best Mexican food, follow Mexicans during lunch time and see where they eat. It has proven to be good advice, for Mexican food, less so for other ethnicities. The Chinese places where the clientele is mostly Asian, serve actual spicy food, unlike Chinese restaurants that cater towards a white crowd. At the former, the first level of spicy about all I want. In the latter I can order the hottish dish on the menu and it's not hot enough. But the best indicator of good Chinese is a busy restaurant during the week.

reply

The only ones I know are the buffets. China ones have a endless amount of shrimp for people in them.

reply

The food tastes the same to me no matter the clientele. I've had Chinese takeout and ate at fine restaurants in white, Chinese and POC areas. I've never had bad Chinese food.

One stereotype that I found to be true is about traditional pizzerias. I've only had good pizza in Italian-owned pizzerias. Twice, I had to toss pizza after one bite when I bought in non-Italian pizzerias. The other times, the pizza tasted horrible, but was edible.

I live in a community with a lot of Chinese university students and there are many Chinese restaurants serving distinct, authentic Chinese cuisines. I think I could say that the higher the proportion of Chinese patrons, the more authentic the cuisine. Most Caucasian Americans have grown up with pretty bland food (referred to as Cantonese, but I'll bet it's not authentic to Canton) served in old style Chinese restaurants.

I love the authentic foods and although in like spicy food, I can't tolerate some of the dishes served at some of the local places.
