Racists like to mock black people.

Children were paid wages. Not enslaved blacks. Newly freed slaves were supposed to receive land, but Lincoln was killed and the new president was a vile white supremacist and former slave owner who instead gave the land set aside for blacks as payment for their labor to only whites.

Blacks were doing well under Reconstruction, but whites became jealous and feared black success. That's when whites created Jim Crow laws and began the century-long terror campaign of lynchings and cross burnings which reversed black progress economically, socially and politically.

Today whites continue to refuse to accept anyone who isn't white as equally American which is the reason for talk about losing the white majority. If whites considered citizens of all races and ethnicities as equally American, then such fear wouldn't exist. Instead, whites perceive themselves as more American than everyone else including Native-Americans. This attitude of white superiority perpetuates racism, ethnic hatred and religious persecution against Jews and Muslims.

Whites know if bigotry were to end, then white skin privilege would end also which is the reason so many whites fight fiercely to maintain the race-based hierarchy created centuries ago.
