Why don't these strict gun laws work? 1) Because they're not all that strict (compare these states to Australia and most of Europe). 2) It's trivially easy to traffic guns across state lines. We have a basic collective action problem. A huge percentage of cigarettes sold in NYC are illegal. What's a relatively easy way to bring that percentage down? Uniform/federal laws.

Instead of cherrypicking, you should look at the world statistically. States with relatively lax gun laws generally have higher rates of violence. As far as guns go, we'd probably have to have much stricter (across the board) in order to see significant reductions. Matt Yglesias had a good post about this years ago, ultimately arguing "the juice ain't worth the squeeze" because, while effective, it's almost politically impossible to implement because of highly motivated, empirically challenged people such as yourself. German Lopez has also done some good reporting on this.
