CBC - Cuba: The Accidental Revolution - They are the ONLY country in the world to be Agriculturally self sustainable.

I don't support Cuba, nor communism and sure as hell would not want to live there but as an IR major I get tired of the propagandistic bullshit being spewed by ignorant Americans towing the government line. Because ignorance really pisses me the fuck off. Think of me like Hemingway or Teddy Roosevelt. They'd take a shot gun to your ignorance.

So I'm going to start with a series of facts about Cuba, just as an FYI. Maybe I'll do Haiti or Germany or some other country next week.

You'd think with all these successes and true utopian paradise of equitable life and sustainability that it'd be the beacon for the world to aspire to and model after yet here we are, mass protest against an impoverished lifestyle. All it took was a little COVID and then its true heavenly spleen unravels itself.

I rather go with the happiness index and choose Finland instead.

reply

Oh totally but I thought it was Norway.

The point is they are survivors. (no one suggests they are anything utopian.) They survived the embargo apocalypse on them where they were blocked from getting ANYTHING from the outside world. Hence why they are known for keeping 60 year old cars going. Nothing could make that embargo so obvious as that symbolic icon to the world. So yeah they live totally impoverished BECAUSE of the embargoes but have something to teach the world despite all that.

Can you imagine though what they could have been capable of if they weren't deliberately cut off from the rest of the world by an overpowering nation to their north that couldn't respect their sovereignty?

What is an "IR" major?

reply

If you don't know you shouldn't be arguing with one.
