Community policing or goofing off?

It made the news when the cop gifted the boy some sneakers and played some hoops on the court. It's kind of a cool story but I also think this sort of recreational activity could be abused by slacker officers. I also think it could be a problem if the kid was shot for the sneakers or the cop's gun goes off after falling from his belt while doing the limbo or a slam dunk. I want cops out there breaking up loiterers instead of joining them to shoot the breeze. I do support the police sponsoring a community basketball tourney but I don't approve of them playing pickup games.

It's the cops own money so who cares? If he's off duty or engaging with the community he serves while not ignoring any calls where he's needed, don't see a problem with that.

I would be worried if the cop is showing favoritism towards one child over the other children. A cop might try to slide into a single woman's DM's by buying her child sneakers. A pedophile cop might try to target young boys with gifts in exchange for sexual favors. Also, a cop might look the other way if he saw his little buddy committing a crime.

I also think a cop won't see the purse snatcher running down the road if he is busy shooting hoops or showing off his dance moves. I contend that a conflict of interest will arise if the cop has to arrest a friend in the neighborhood.

"the cop's gun goes off after falling from his belt while doing the limbo or a slam dunk."

That's not how it works.

Per the article below, an FBI agent did a backflip in a bar and his gun went off after it fell out of his belt. I know it's rare but it could happen. The Sig Sauer P320 was also discharging when dropped.

I would approve of this event since it's an organized event with multiple officers. I think they would have reached out to more locals if they held it in the 'hood instead of a tourist destination.
