The cold war with the former Soviet Union ended with the U.S. winning.

A new global cold war between the American-style of government of liberal democracy and the Russian-style of government of illiberal democracy has begun.

Illiberal democracy is a "softer" version of a dictatorship. It pretends to be a democracy because people still vote, but the elections are corrupt and controlled by the leader. Other democratic tools are controlled by him also like the news media, legislature, institutions. There is no rule of law. Even some of the opposing political parties are just fronts for the leader. Legitimate opposition is arrested or silenced. Recently, Putin manipulated his way into remaining "president" past his term limit until at least 2036.

Putin insulted democracy and Trump did not defend it.

The U.S. sanctioned Putin for invading Crimea and the Ukraine which he wanted removed. Putin's plan to destroy global democracy and weaken the leader of the free world, the U.S., by attacking our elections, destroying NATO, placing a bounty on our troops, constant cyber attacks as well as weakening America’s global influence while strengthening Russia’s.

Putin has an ally in Trump, who shares a similar anti-democratic and autocratic vision, has helped weaken the U.S. economically, and strategically as well as our institutions, democracy and rule of law.

It explains how an elected autocrat slowly attacks and destroys democracy from within until it becomes an illiberal democracy like Turkey, Venezuela and Russia.
