Fox News Faked Riot Photos

Fox News published digitally altered and misleading photos on stories about Seattle’s Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) in what photojournalism experts called a clear violation of ethical standards for news organizations.

As part of a package of stories Friday about the zone, where demonstrators have taken over several city blocks on Capitol Hill after Seattle police abandoned the East Precinct, Fox’s website for much of the day featured a photo of a man standing with a military-style rifle in front of what appeared to be a smashed retail storefront.

The image was actually a mashup of photos from different days, taken by different photographers — it was done by splicing a Getty Images photo of an armed man, who had been at the protest zone June 10, with other images from May 30 of smashed windows in downtown Seattle. Many other photos were also faked by Fox.

Fox’s site had no disclaimers revealing the photos had been manipulated. The network removed the images after inquiries from The Seattle Times and then they issued an apology.

The June 10 photo of an unidentified man with a gun standing in front of a car in CHAZ was taken by Seattle freelance photographer David Ryder, who distributed the photo through Getty Images.

The image, as displayed on the Fox News website, was spliced with other photos, including a photo of a smashed retail storefront in May, making it look as though the scene was all playing out concurrently in the autonomous zone. “It is definitely Photoshopped,” confirmed Ryder. “To use a photo out of context in a journalistic setting like that seems unethical.”

Photojournalism ethics experts agreed.

“I think it’s disgraceful propaganda and terribly misrepresentative of documentary journalism in times like this, when truth-telling and accountability is so important,” said Kenny Irby, a photojournalism ethics educator and consultant. “There is no attribution. There is no acknowledgment of the montage, and it’s terribly misleading.”

Akili Ramsess, executive director of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), said ethical standards clearly prohibit alteration of photos in news accounts.

“For a news photo that is supposed to be of the moment, it is completely egregious to manipulate this the way they have done,” Ramsess said.

Fox News has “a responsibility to their public. It’s one thing for their opinion hosts to state whatever opinion they have, but for their online news platform, they have to follow the ethical norms of any news organization,” she said.

National news outlets on Friday also continued to cite a now-withdrawn comment by a Seattle police commander suggesting protesters were extorting payments from businesses within CHAZ. Seattle police Chief Carmen Best walked back that statement on Thursday, saying the comment was based on rumor and social media. “We haven’t had any formal reports of this occurring,” she said.

I say we wall them all in and let them eat themselves alive.

reply

They are vegans so that should be interesting, lol.

reply

There are no vegans in lock-in holes...

reply

Even better. First they suffer. Then they suffer some more.

reply

Who are you referring to? The staff at FOX News who faked the riot photos to fit their conspiracy theories ?

reply

To be sure, you are more upset about some photo than you are people taking over six blocks in Seattle?

reply

To be correct, you want the staff at FOX News who faked the photos to be walled in and let them eat themselves alive ?

reply

Seattle Times is a liberal vegan site and Fox News is faux news, so thats a lose/lose for you. Please only post from reputable sources.

reply

"Fox News is faux news"

Exactly! Faux news already admitted their deceit and apologized for it.

Seattle Times has a high factual reporting rate which is the most important criteria and makes them reputable. On the mediabiasfactcheck website about the Seattle Times: A factual search reveals they have not failed a fact check.

A slight liberal bias is irrelevant as long as it's factual. Being vegan is even more irrelevant. Personally, I like to have various viewpoints for clarity. I wish you would broaden your news sources in order to broaden your mind. Right now, you're trapped in an echo chamber. That makes you narrow-minded, ignorant and bigoted.

Continue to watch your "news" sources, but at least add one or two from a least-biased source.

News service agencies are the best like the AP, Reuters and Agence France-Press since TV stations and newspapers buy their news from them before a spin is added.

Thats the whole point K, fake news begets fake news. Nobody can tell whats real anymore because of the social justice machine.™️ I stopped watching news years ago because of so much political bias. Even local news has some sorta bias lately, the only thing I can watch now is the weather forecast. Its the highlight of my day.

That's how autocracies work. They try to get you to distrust news media. Then, if a crooked leader does something illegal, and the media reports it, you won't trust the information. News is the fourth pillar of democracy. It holds politicians accountable to the people.

Right-wing political commentators told their listeners not to trust liberal or left-wing news including mainstream. That was always nonsense. Political commentary is opinion. Some are very honest and informative while others are dishonest propaganda.

I suggest you step out of your comfort zone and give it a try. You don't have to watch American. I sample foreign news all the time.

I stepped out years ago luckily. The BBC news is not too bad, at least you get to hear about other things going on in the World.

CNN used to have worldwide news and they sent their reporters overseas. Then, they decided to save money.
