The most undertalked genre on this site.

I mean come on! Only one and a half pages of discussion. Fantasy is probably one of the best genres of entertainment.

Aside from anything relating to Tolkien, Hollywood really isn't producing any really good fantasy movies right now. It's kind of sad, because although I'm not exclusively a fantasy fan, I love diversity in entertainment, and think that having a wide variety of tastes is always the best.

It is kinda sad, but it's true. There is just not many fantasy movies being made, and the ones the have come out recently have been pretty terrible.

Yes, it's kind of odd that in an age of so many blockbusters with special effects as the selling point, we aren't seeing more fantasy driven films. The best in recent memory for me were the Lord of the Rings, I was so burnt out on those however, I didn't bother with The Hobbit.

I'd like to see other fantasy properties other than the absolute most well known ones turned to live action, just to put a major adventure out there that wasn't comic book based (don't get me wrong, I love comic book movies!).

We need more movies to talk about. Last decent one I saw, other than the LOTR stuff, was the new Conan. Really enjoyed that one!

One of the problems with this genre of movies is that it seems to rely completely on books for storylines. And as The Golden Compass and Narnia sequels have shown, not all successful books translate well into successful movies.

I think at this point, what fantasy filmmakers (if there are any) need to do is write their own stories that work for the screen, rather than try to wrench book stories into a format they weren't intended to satisfy.

Like everyone said, there aren't that many good fantasy movies. Reasons: One, fantasy films are very involved. A good number of props have to be custom made, not to mention the landscapes, castles, and other fantasy elements.
Two, fantasy requires a good deal of "world building" before the actual plot can happen. No one wants to sit through an hour of exposition before the story begins, and no one wants to jump into a story without any explanation of the world the story takes place in. That's why they rely on book, and adaptations, like sequels, are often lame.

This board should be combined with the Sc-Fi board.

IMDb is one of the worst forums for discussion in general. There are a lot of people who use the site, but nobody wants to talk on their boards. Maybe they're all like me, and dislike the way it's setup.
