Lord of the Rings. It's my fave trilogy and the epicness of these movies are like no other - the battles combined with the music. (I do still love SW though.)
The connection you feel for each character in LotR is a lot stronger than in Star Wars. Each character is explored in such depths and as an audience member, you understand and feel for almost every single character in these movies - there's a strong connection built. Not to say Star Wars characters aren't great at all - I do love them, and Han Solo is one of my all time favourite characters. But LotR, the characters feel so much more complex and there are so many of them. The fiercely strong friendship between Sam and Frodo, the leadership and strength of Aragorn, the banter between Legolas and Gimli, the stupidity of the lovable Merry and Pippin, the complicated Boromir and the deception and conflict within Gollum/Smeagol... So much emotion. I can't say SW is even comparable to this unfortunately...
The tone of the movies are different - SW is lighter in contrast to LotR which is more serious, darker and scarier even. SW is definitely more "family friendly". This is a matter of preference - I always love the darker movies.
John Williams score in SW is of course legendary. The Force theme is my all time favourite music score. But LotR music is still beautiful and just as epic as the movies are and fit most perfectly.
Of course SW has the cool factor, introducing a whole new world of sci-fi with lightsabers, the force etc.
I think LotR is perhaps a perfect trilogy. I cannot fault it. But there are flaws with the SW movies. LotR is more complete and are arguably better made movies than SW.
The stories of both movies are different and brilliant. Both loved franchises, but for me, LotR wins. It's got everything and is perfect.
