Why Bendis' Run On Spider-Man Is My Favorite Run On The Character

The original Ultimate run

I think the main thing here is because that's the run that highlights the best the Hero's journey. That is front and center about Peter Parker as a human being. Its the run that details his evolution both as a hero and as a human being the better. Its the run that, unlike the movie reboot, actually justifies itself. Actually changes imensily from the original material still with respect for it of course.

I just love the character moments the most, its what Bendis does best.

Now Im not a fan of a bunch of other things Bendis has done.. but he hit solid with this... so solid.

I have to disagree. What put me off the most (initially) was the fact that it took six issues to explain Spider-Man's backstory. This was around the time comics started to expand 1-2 issue storylines to fit into 6 issue Trade Paperbacks they could sell in bookstores. They also started getting a little addicted to quoting reviews of their work from Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone.

Another thing that put me off was Mark Bagley's art style. I used to like Bagley but his Ultimate designs really put me off. The covers and story titles seemed bland to me (they usually a blue or red border on the sides, compressing the action, and a one-word story title), and later on the Venom origin was pretty poor. It's hard for me to get into Bendis' work, even though his Avengers run did have some good moments. This is just my opinion.
