Question about Preacher comic book series

I'm starting to read the Preacher comic book series. There's something about the story that isn't clear to me. In issue #4, Standing Tall, when Jesse first meets the Saint of Killers, why exactly doesn't Jesse try to kill him by simply telling him to die? I know Jesse wanted information first, and the Saint made Deblanc appear to give info. But after Deblanc leaves and before the Saint leaves, why didn't Jesse command him to die? The Saint was wakened to kill Jesse. Was it because he realized Jesse's power (when he made Deblanc appear) and changed his mind and/or plans, and Jesse was generous with who he killed as a preacher?

Also, please don't spoil the further issues for me. Thanks.

It is explained later on in the series, I don't want to go into specifics in case of spoilers! Jesse rarely kills without reason, it's just not in his nature (sure he'll beat the crap out of someone but he stops short of killing them without good reason).

It's hot... but not as hot as the night Johnny Viti got married...

Jesse doesn't do that sort of thing with his power. He only does it once, really, and it was an accident.

And THAT is where babies come from.

There's 66 issues! Everything gets wrapped up and/or explained fairly satisfactory, you just have to stick with it.
