It appears there may have been a long gap in their time together as Pilot/co-Pilot between RotJ and TFA. I think sometime early on after RotJ Chewbacca chooses to live with his family on Kashyyyk. Six years prior to TFA he is still with his family. When he and Han got the band together before TFA is unknown.

when it went into general release as is often misquoted. I was as big a
fan as one could be for the first two films anyway.
But my question is a joke that I stole from somewhere decades ago. The
basic joke here is Harrison Ford speaking English somehow communicating
with an inarticulate creature who's language is a series of grunts and
growls sounding like a dog yawning. Just the fact that Ford can communicate
with this dog creature; taken to an extreme by the concept of intimate
conversation is like a human conversing with a dog.
It seems like you all missed the joke here. I mean come on relax a bit
STAR WARS is not above parody.
