Star Wars Started It All

Special effects galore, superhero extravaganza, sci-fi staples... it was George Lucas who triggered such an avalanche. Is he the best director, or these guys over here?

no, 2001 started it all

George Lucas is the pioneer of media franchises. He started the first major one. (The Lone Ranger may have been the first.) He is also the founder of a number of companies that streamlined cinematographic special effects. He invented the heads-up display. He invented the hologram. He invented the lightsaber. He cinematized the floating city. However, he hardly the best director. He merely made it easier for much better directors to emerge. So, in a sense, he did start it all, but there were many who came before him, like the many developers of the motion camera, film stock and the computer.

all of those things existed before star wars. apart from doing special effects differently (ie computer controlled camera motion for multiple repeatable passes) most of what Star Wars did had already been done in some way before. blue screen, stop-motion, rotoscoping had all been used before.

even the compositing machine they used was cobbled together from old parts.

Star Wars is the greatest Sci-Fi franchise ever. Sorry Star Trek.

It got me into the genre. I really found it all fascinating from the force to the darkside. I wish Lucas had done his planned eight movie production in the same style as the empire strikes back.
