Has anyone read Cursed Child yet?

If so, was it good? Do you recommend it?

reply

It was great, I'm rereading it again. I totally recommend it, BUT don't expect it to be exactly like the other seven. It's in script form (which takes a few scenes to get used to) so it's a little different but still great ;).

It's a pretty poor script. It probably is better when seen than read. The story is flat out fanfictiony with lots of OOC moments and some very ridiculous plot developments. There are some nice moments between characters but overall it was very disappointing.

I haven't read it yet, but it kind of sounds like it should be treated as a rough draft.
The book that comes out on July 31, 2016 won't be the only version of the book that we see. The play is in previews and open to the public before its official opening at the end of July, and typically that means that the play is going to change slightly based on audience reactions and reviews. So there's a good chance that what you read in the first edition of this new book is not exactly what you'd be seeing on stage if you happened to see it after the initial premiere — hence, the second version to follow.

I'm hoping the Definitive Collectors Edition will fix some of the problems people seem to be having with it.

reply

I don't think it will. The problems people have are fairly big and the makers of the play have said that not much has changed between the previews and the final product.

I get the impression that if the audience doesn't laugh at one of the rare one-liners in the play, they'll try different ones till they get a reaction.

I don't see how they can change anything major in the story other than how the effects are delivered onstage. It is what it is, and sadly the rehearsal script is a cashgrab if I ever saw one (a smart one, of course, and a good way to bypass a proliferation of potential unofficial scripts I suppose)

Not sure if "recommend" is the right word, but it's one of the easiest reads you'll ever bother yourself with—there is almost zero character development (all the characters are instant oatmeal).

All you're reading is dialogue. Because I feel the authors knew this script would be released to the public, there are a few extra acknowledgments within the scene descriptions that I'm not sure an audience member would even be aware of, and that includes names of new characters whose names aren't always spoken aloud (at least, not in full).

Ron has a few funny lines, and I actually can imagine one of the fight scenes being just gorgeous to watch on stage (no spoilers, not even where it takes place) and I had more fun reading that than I did the Battle of Hogwarts.

The highlight of the entire book was Scorpius. What a smart and funny guy. While his character has little to no development, he is at least consistent throughout. The writers must've missed something about Albus, they (characters in the book) kept calling his character dry-witted and funny, but he was anything BUT that.

Great scene locations. And way too dependent on the previous books, unfortunately. I thought I was going in for some fresh adventures and I was excited about it. I would actually like several new books (even though Jo has now stated that will never ever happen, as HP is "done") because Scorpius could be such a fascinating character.

So far so good

I have no complaints yet except for the time turner device

Look like Tarzan talk like Jane! HAHA

I enjoyed it but I don't know if it's really good enough as a harry potter canon...like someone said it does feel like fan fiction, but it's hard to judge it properly as it would be different when you see it as opposed to just read cause you don't really get much depth while reading as it's essentially just dialogue.

There were a few shocking plot points though and one in particular that I think is going to be something most people hate (i'm kinda undecided right now on how I feel, I don't think I really liked it either) - Voldemort having a child

I am definitely a mad man with a box!
