Stupidest/worst changes from book to movie

Obviously stuff needs to be cut in the interest of time or pacing but this is about changes that renders thing incoherent rather than for the sake of time.

Changing Harry and Ron sneaking out at midnight to duel Malfoy and Hermione following them to keep them out of trouble and their subsequent stumbling upon Fluffy and Hermione reprimanding them...to the 3 accidentally getting on the wrong staircase and stumbling on Fluffy....and Hermione reprimanding them. Stupid because Hermiome acting like it was Harry and Ron's fault now makes
no *beep* sense in the movie (Philosopher Stone)

Angry Dumbledore for no reason (Goblet of Fire)

The Durmstang entrance. Doesn't ruin anything it's just so retarded.

Cho selling out the DA but then being revealed to be forced to do so by way of veritaserum. Changing it so Cho sells them out was fine as the movie didn't have the time to devote to her emotional problems and jealousy issues. But revealing she was forced to do so and leaving it at makes Harry look like a dick for not apologizing. Seriously what was the point of saying she was forced?

Hacking Snape's backstory to bits

Casting a young actor to play Lily that doesn't have the same eyes as Radcliffe.

The attack on the Burrow. They cut out things that are central to Voldemort's backstory (namely the memories involving his mother and father as well as his attempt to secure a teaching position at Hogwarts) and used that time to create a scenario that didn't even exist in the book. That irked me.

When I watch the movies, it feels like they gutted the core mythology of the books in order to add in more action and drama. I understand that they have movies to make, but damn.

While there are rare cases where the movie is superior to the book it doesn't apply to the Harry Potter series.

Even Prisoner of Azkaban, the best (or least awful) of the movies, I'd rather people read the book. The HP books truly show why the book medium is usually superior to film.

There were a lot of things. My biggest issue was how the movies basically reduced Ron to comic relief and didn't develop the Ron/Harry friendship nearly enough. Someone clearly fell in love with Emma Watson because it's astonishing to see how often Ron's dialogue was given to Hermione. Then HBP didn't show all the memories which helped give context to Voldemort as a character. There are many more if I think about it. I still like the movies but they were often fairly different from the books.

reply

Well if they didn't make any changes to the movies they would have been all very long if they didn't, they I am sure that the movies would have been 3 hours or even more if they didn't make the changes that they did. And I am sure when it came to sub plots that wasn't really apart of the main plot, they were easy to cut.

You should probably at least bother to read my post before replying.

I know you posted this over a month ago, but here are my thoughts on the underdevelopment of Harry and Ron's friendship on screen. To me, Dan and Emma had such incredible chemistry, as actors and as friends, that that translated better than Dan and Rupert. By no means is Rupert a bad actor, on the contrary, he has in my mind, one of the strongest performances out of the trio.
However, he just doesn't have that "magical" spark between him and Dan, like Emma did. It's clear throughout the entire series, Dan and Emma are close friends both on and off screen. Better chemistry makes for a better, and more engaging film.

I will say that the stupidest change was from "Philsopher's stone", when they changed the snake's home country from Brazil to Burma. Yeah, it seems to be a very small thing to complain about. But that is just it. Since it seems to be such a small thing, why change it at all?

The burning of the Burrow in "Half Blood Prince" was weird too.

Intelligence and purity.

Chamber of Secrets: Having Hermione explain the term "mudblood" to Harry.
Ron and Harry retaining their own voices when they take polyjuice potion to turn into Crabbe and Goyle.

Prisoner of Azkaban: The choir and Harry riding Buckbeak. Although the latter scene did happen in the book, it went on too long and had nothing to do with the plot. Cutting those two scenes would have allowed Lupin to tell Harry that he and his friends made the marauders map.

Also POA: Freeze frame of Harry at the end

Goblet of Fire: Showing Barty Crouch jr from the start of the movie.

Probably more I can't think of right now.
