I watched the Harry Potter IMAX marathon

It was pretty awesome to watch the HP movies on the big screen again. Honestly, I still love them, flaws and all. Its not very often that such a long series retains so much of the cast and there was something really special about watching all the young kids grow up on screen. One of the things that struck me was how committed the adult cast was. Not one of them was just sleepwalking through their roles for their paycheck. Looking back I realize how little screentime Oldman actually had in the series but he still made a big impact. People like Maggie Smith and of course Alan Rickman had tiny roles in a few of the films but they never faltered from their commitment. I think Thewlis was one of the underrated supporting performers because he was terrific in POA and then never really got the scope to perform in any of the films that came after. Broadbent in HBP, Staunton in OOTP, and Rickman in DH2 were oscar nom worthy in my opinion. Then there are timeless performances by Carter, Coltrane, Gleeson etc... who basically are my vision of the characters when I read the books now. Anyways, it was a fun time, especially when the new movies in October were largely crap.

I didn't see nay of them on the IMAX format, but what were the starting times like for the movies at the theater you saw? And what did you think of the re-formating that they did for the first two Harry Potter films?

reply

I think the reformatting was pretty good. I didn't see an issue with the picture quality. Basically the nearest IMAX theater had all the movies playing on the weekend with a few scattered shows throughout the rest of the week. Essentially I watched HP1-4 on Saturday from afternoon to sometime in the middle of the night. Then I saw OOTP and HBP on Sunday morning. I saw DH1+2 on Wednesday night.

I envy you.

Make a move, Reindeer Games..

As do I. I hate living in a small town where the nearest IMAX is 5 hours away. I know, if I wanted it bad enough, I could have made it there. But unfortunately trying to justify to other people (non-HP fans, mind you) driving that far to see a movie I have already seen countless times just cause it is on a bigger screen made me reconsider. :/

reply

Yeah. I was pretty lucky because I had a few IMAX theaters within an hour radius distance including one that was 15 mins away. The advantage of living in a busy area.
