OT: Some advice for traveling abroad? (Hopefully Sam reads this)

Taking a family trip to Portugal in August. The farthest I've ever gone out of the country is to the Bahamas on a cruise when I was a kid so as cool as this is, it's all a bit overwhelming admittedly.

Tips from people who've travelled abroad? And Sam! I don't think we'll be taking a tour so I'll probably have to go out on my own to visit some cool spots in Lisbon. Is there anything I should be aware of? Places I should go to? Places I should avoid? Let me know

Also considering learning some basic Portuguese just to get by  ...We'll see how that goes

I'm assuming you're an American, use this site to verify visa requirements and other tips about traveling there - https://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/3208.htm

Main things are making sure your passport will not expire within 6 months after arriving there, getting a universal power adapter and knowing the foreign currency exchange rates. Depending on how long you are there for, get a local SIM card once you arrive and then use Google translate to overcome any language barriers.
