No more message boards! WTF!

Just saw this announcement. What a terrible decision!

Sure one could probably find other places to discuss books but for movies it will be a f_cking disaster. I often come here after watching a movie to see what other people thought of it and despite some trolls there were a lot of interesting discussions.

Imdb was unique since you could discuss even the most obscure movie, and I really liked the simple lay-out of the message boards. Now with that feature gone there isn't much point to visit the site any more.

Couldn't they just shut down the politics board and those frequently trolled by all kinds of morons?

Exactly. I liked coming here to see if something we a worth watching or talking about what I thought of a show.

On a site as large as IMDb the message boards take up a small percentage of the total. I have no idea what that percentage is but probably around 1-2% at best. Axing them will do nothing positive.

Despite the message I doubt much thought went into the decision.

Very sad.

It is a terrible decision.

And in their announcement they dismiss and minimize how popular the message boards are, calling the users a "small but passionate" group??? MILLIONS of registered users use the boards on this site.

And yes, it's an incredibly useful place to come here and discuss something you've just seen. Pretty much every movie I ever see, I don't just look up information on the movie's page --- I go to the message board too. It's the first thing I do right after looking at the information on that movie, looking up the location, the director, an actor etc. Very next thing I do, I head straight to the message board.

You sometimes learn even more interesting things about the movie by discussing it there.

There is a troll problem on the more active "big" boards, but there are so many, many boards that have no trouble at all on them, and are positive, informative places to chat with others.

BIG mistake, IMDB. I can't believe how dismissive they are being about something that is fully half the good things about using IMDB.

As for social media -- I hate it. I don't have active discussions with anyone on things like Twitter and Facebook.

Well said and seconded. I, too, head right for a movie's message board after seeing it. I always learn from and enjoy threads and posts there-on.

It's all like some bad movie.

I'd come here after watching a particularly interesting film as well. I mostly just read the comments, but it was a good place to see what others had to say, and I found some really good, insightful posts, too. It's a shame.

As for books, goodreads is not a bad place at all. Plus, it has groups you can join if you're interested in specific topics. I've found a lot of books there that I never would have heard about just from following people whose tastes seem similar to mine. If you haven't already, check it out.

I'm kinda glad they're shutting it down. This sh!t is addictive and distracting.

I have been on goodreads for a while now and I agree it's a good place to find recommendations even though I rarely use the groups at all.
