Brighton Rock by Graham Greene

pulsating gangster novel full of action, intrigue and romance (?) and the sights and sounds and smells of brighton. great dialogs. it is one of the most entertaining graham greene novels i have read so far. hope he doesnt screw it up with catholic guilt. though i think he will. i can see it coming.

loved greene's salacious descriptions of the women.

I get melancholy if I don't write. I need the company of people who don't exist.

reply

Yup, lot's of Catholic guilt.

The film's quite good, apart from the cop out ending.

Haven't read it but the film is great and made Richard Attenborough a star -- women threw their panties at him.

Also there's no Catholic guilt in the film (that I recall); it's just a straight-up gangster story.

That's a pretty cryptic remark, Pimpin.

Although in reality Dickie Attenborough was one of the nicest human beings who ever walked the earth, his arguably best-known screen roles are for playing two psychopaths -- one a serial killer (10 Rillington Place), and one a gangster (Brighton Rock). Back then he was not the avuncular-looking man that he was in his maturity.

There's a great newspaper article somewhere where he talks about the huge fame he instantly acquired from Brighton Rock, and how it was astonishig and unnnerving ... and he also talks about the women mobbing him in the street and throwing their panties. (Which surprised me -- I always thought that was a fairly recent phenomenon.)

i have watched 10 RILLINGTON PLACE. it also has a great performance by JOHN HURT. i really need to watch BRIGHTON ROCK. though i think IDA ARNOLD (who was portrayed as sexy in the novel) is a played by a rather old and unattractive lady.

Hermione Baddeley was definitely older than Attenborough, for instance, but she is quite a tart in the film.

Speaking of 10 Rillington Place, Attenborough said he quite disliked doing that role and it upset him greatly and he found it very difficult. He took the role because he was trying to raise money for his Gandhi project, which had been his dream for many years but lacked funding, and which he still wouldn't materialize for another decade.
