UPDATED: Record 27 Animated Features Vie for Oscar Nods

Let's corral a list of potential (qualifying) animated feature films for the 2017 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature award.

See what we might need to see (even before the nominations come out on January 20th).

Since we don't have a published qualifying list like we do with feature length documentaries and the animated short films, let's try and make one here.πŸ˜™

Please keep in mind that any films need at least a limited theatrical release

Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders (2016)
Finding Dory (2016)
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016))
Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)
The Little Prince (I) (2015)
Miss Hosukai (2015)
Moana (2016)
My Life as a Courgette (2016)
The Red Turtle (2016)
Sausage Party (2016)
Sing (2016)
Storks (2016)
Trolls (2016)
Your Name (2016)
Zootopia (2016)

THE ONES I'VE WATCHED ALREADY.

NOT SURE IF THIS QUALIFIES:
The Boy and the Beast (2015)
Rudolf the Black Cat (2016)

I'm sure I'm missing some smaller (possible stinkers that should have been direct to DVD/VOD releases). But I'll add them if you let me know about them.

Not to rain on your topic but the list might as well just be Zootopia, Finding Dory, and Moana as those are the only films that have a chance of winning. The brick headed Academy has no animation respect and I don't see that changing this year.

The above said, so it doesn't look like I'm not participating in the topic at hand, I believe Batman, the Killing Joke got a small theater release and should qualify. I've also heard of Miss Hokusai from 2015 was possibly submitted as well, but I can't confirm that.

No. You're quite right about the likely locks for nominations. I'm trying to figure out the remaining one or two possible nominations for that category.

Remember that When Marnie Was There, Anomalisa, and Boy & the World were nominated last year. So, small productions can still be nominated.

It's not the nominations that are a problem, they have reasonable, qualified people behind that. The problem is the actual voters who pick the winner. These are people who have admitted they usually don't see all the nominees and even sometimes let their kids pick the winner.

As for who the nominees will be this year, likely the following:

One of Zootopia, Finding Dory, or Moana will be snubbed. However, one will also be the winner as per the reasons I've discussed.

Kubo will be nominated, every Laika film has and the people who make the nominations seem to love stop motion.

The last two will be some combination of the foreign films we've listed. Speaking of, I think April and the Extraordinary World is another possibility.

The academy has said they'd invite a lot of "diverse" members so there's the chance that not only Disney/Pixar may win.

This year they could've easily nominated Pixar's The Good Dinosaur, The Peanuts Movie, and even stuff like Minions. Instead they went with anime, a Brazilian indie cartoon, and an R-rated movie (something many never expected to see in that category).

I just said the nominations are not the problem, it's that the kinds of films you just mentioned have no chance of winning. The people who choose the nominees for this category and the voters are not the same. Oh, and I also said that there will likely again be two foreign nominations this year, neither of which will have a chance at winning.

Sorry, but your post sounds like it comes from someone with no animation respect, therefore it's credibility is shot upon arrival.

Limit voting only to members who watched ALL the nominees. Problem solved.

reply

Then there would be nobody left to vote on the category. 
