Antz vs A Big's Life

Don't really like either of them, but A Bugs Life.

I loved loved LOVED Bugs Life for the characters and the humor. When Antz came out, I remember liking it, but tried to watch it recently and was turned off. The humor fell a little flat. If I recall correctly, Dreamworks had the idea already for Antz independently of Bugs Life when Bugs Life was announced. And I think they had begun working on it already, as well. The timing isn't so great.

I prefer A Bug's Life overall, although Antz has more substance and weight. Bug's Life was more visually stunning with more appealing character designs and was much more rewatchable, although the writing is the weakest element. It borrowed a little too liberally from Seven Samurai. The characters felt more funnier in Bug's Life. We have a neurotic drone ant, a male ladybug that's mistaken for a girl, a menacing grasshopper, and a caterpillar that wants to become a butterfly and has a German accent. Antz relied very heavily on the actors' star personas to make their characters interesting.

Antz had better writing and worked well as a satire with loads of adult humor and innuendo that would go over kids' heads. The themes of individuality and anti-totalitarianism came off more stronger than it did in Bug's Life. The visuals in Antz looks more realistic and less fantasized in comparison to Bug's Life, but while the characters look like real, humanoid ants, their designs lack appeal and color.

I say A Bugs Life. Antz wasn't terrible from what I can recall, it's just that I prefer fun for all ages over adult humor 99% of the time.

A Bug's Life. I found it funnier with a better pace. And I loved the voice acting.

I didn't care much for the voice actors in Antz. They were ok.
