Interesting...a lot more glum and gritty than I expected, from the few samples I listened to. I'll reserve judgement till I can hear the whole thing.
shareI think Alice is one of his best scores, easily the most memorable/hummable theme we've had in years for me.
Fan of Charlie too, especially 'Finale'.
One of the themes in SW? Huh?
shareI'm with ya on one thing Janowitz - Wolfman was definitely better. That was almost a sequel score to Kilar's Bram Stoker's Dracula - listen to both back to back and most people will probably crap their pants.
I'll defend Alice, though, easily. It was just a fun listen. Had the choral of Edward, the themes of Returns, the silliness of Charlie, the action of Apes. Wasn't as good overall as most of those scores, but I still found it very enjoyable.
That Star wars comparison are you serious? There's a hint of similarity but not much. That's nitpicking. If anything the theme is Glass-esque.
I disagree with Elfman's quality going down with Burton's. I thought Apes was great and added a lot of things that was lacking in the film. It's right up there with Goldsmith's original, imo. Big Fish was (and still is)a great score for a great movie. The film and score wasn't typical of either of them, imo. C&TCF was also great and fit the film like a glove. I don't think the film's that bad either. I'll admit the score's enjoyablity(if that's a word) is a matter of taste though. It might not be your cup of tea. I thought the Corpse Bride score was more dramtic and mature than his Nightmare score. "Remains of the Day" should've been nominated for best song, imo. Alice score was awesome and really captured the spirit of Lewis Caroll's book as well as Burton's take on it. Though the film was meh. I think Elfman musicallly isn't deterioarting like Burton's filmmaking is. Elfman seems and tries to be a lot more creative than Tim is lately in all his scores not for Burton's. But to each his own.
