halfway through Avengers....

....and I sure did enjoy the great heroic main theme...for the 20 seconds I heard it....

WHHHHHHHYYYYY!!!????

maybe it's one of those things were the theme gets more mileage in the movie than on the album. and since i'm never wrong *cough* i'd say that's the case

Heck is where you go to if you don't believe in Gosh

Well I finished it, and maybe I was a tad premature - the main theme does pop up again a few times, mostly in the last couple tracks. It's a good one, not great, and considering the rumours/rumblings of almost every character getting their own theme, I'm surprised and slightly disappointed that I only ever heard the one, main theme.

But it's a very fun score, keeps getting better with every track. Almost my favourite of the year, all things considered.

Well this was my most anticipated score of the year, so there's no WAY it could have lived up to my own expectations. Upon my first listen, it was PRETTY good, but nothing really memorable. Perhaps once I've given it a few more listens (or actually seen the movie) I'll be able to appreciate it more.

I'd really hoped that each hero's theme would have been more distinct, and I wish Silvestri would have at least borrowed from Debney, Doyle, and Armstrong.

Yeah, it sounds like my initial disappointment isn't being completely unfounded. In fact, almost all of the reviews I have read expressed disinterest with Silvestri's score, even within the film. A shame, really...all the hype, all the interviews with Whedon, the fact that it was goddamn Avengers and a goddamn sweet composer scoring it...I dunno, it could've been a lot better; more thematic, more memorable, more epic. But it's still really darn good, so I guess we shouldn't complain too much.

Oh no, you're not alone by any means! When Silvestri got the job, I was psyched. Captain America was my favorite score of all the Avengers individually, and the fact that I've been a lifelong fan didn't hurt either. As one of the AICN reviews pointed out, a movie this big needs an equally big score to go along with it - and this one kind of fell flat. Is it BAD? Not by any means. It's just not as epic as it could have been. In my book, mediocre Alan Silvestri is still better than half the stuff out there!
