Battleship

Boy, where would Steve Jablonsky be without big, angry robots, huh? I was kind of disappointed to hear he was tapped to do the score to Battleship; it reminds me ENOUGH of Transformers without a carbon copy soundtrack. I mean, it's not BAD, by any means, but it's certainly nothing special, either. I don't know why I was expecting so much - possibly because I was really impressed by Your Highness last year - but between this and Avengers, the summer soundtracks aren't really blowing my skirt up just yet.

I usually like Jablonsky. From the current batch of RC composers, he's probably the most talented. But I really disliked Battleship. This may seem weird coming from the guy who can listen to all three discs of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo soundtrack, but I can't remember the last time a score got this much on my nerves.

The Avengers was a solid score, but nowhere near the masterpiece I hoped it would be. So yeah, so far 2012 hasn't been too impressive.

First - loved the line "hasn't blown my skirt up yet". That made me smile.

Second - I enjoyed Battleship in the sense that I enjoy a crappy 1 dollar hamburger from McDonalds. It sorta filled me up and tasted Ok...but it soon became poop. Battleship has it's moments, but in all honesty, I did have to listen to it in about 10 minute chunks over the course of a week. Make it a 20-30 minute score, and it's not the worst.

Third - 2012 hasn't been that impressive in CERTAIN areas, but it depends where you're looking. Black Tulip and Black Gold are probably not technically 2012 films, but the scores only came out this year so I'm counting them, and both were absolutely lovely. Journey 2 was incredible, Avengers was disappointing but still a lot of fun, and I enjoyed the hell out of John Carter, Wrath of the Titans, Dark Shadows, and what I've heard so far of MIB 3.

So let's not despair just yet! True, we haven't heard anything like some early-year scores of previous years, like Priest in 2011 and How to Train Your Dragon in 2010. But keep the hope alive, boys.
