Let's rate some random scores!

I'm bored, so I'm gonna pull up 10 random scores, and let's all rate/discuss them until we get annoyed, then pick 10 more. Sound awesome? I agree. :P

My own ratings are beside èm, out of 5:

Finding Nemo - ***
X-Men - ****
Braveheart - *****
Vertigo - ****1/2
The Godfather - ***1/2
How to Train Your Dragon - *****
The Fountain - *****
Jurassic Park - ****
Goldeneye - *
Final Fantasy - ***1/2

I must say, considering your dislike of musical plagarism in scores, I'm surprised you mentioned nothing of The Godfather...

Final Fantasy was one I bought back when it came out, and was always kinda disappointed and put off by how...I dunno, weird it was. I got it the same day as Planet of the Apes, and for a 13 year old kid, Apes was the one that I loved the most by far. But I just recently relistened to Fantasy, and I think I finally get why people go ga-ga over it. Very interesting music.

Finding Nemo - ***1/2 Some great moments, but overall a bit on the long side.

X-Men - *** Probably the weakest of the X-Men scores. Final track is gorgeous though!

Braveheart - **** One of the first scores I really loved. It lost some of it's appeal though, I don't enjoy it as much as I used to.

Vertigo - never heard it.

The Godfather - *** Works in the film, but never heard it on album

How to Train Your Dragon - ***** Well, what I can say... One of the best scores of the last five years

The Fountain - ***** Mansell's masterpiece.

Jurassic Park - ***** First score I bought on CD, so for me it'll always be special

Goldeneye - **** Another early favorite of mine. Serra was, before I discovered Goldsmith and Horner, my fave composer. I know this one is pretty despised, but I think it's pretty underrated and fits the film perfectly.

Final Fantasy - ***** Damn dude, you were 13 when this one came out? I feel old! Anyway, I also bought it on the same day as Elfman's Apes score. Love both for the same reason, cause they are LOUD! Like Janowitz said, Goldenthal really deserved an Oscar nom for this one. It really is a masterpiece (although I can understand the 13 year old you not liking it, it also took me some time to appreciate Goldenthal)

Anyway, cool topic Gilbert! You made wanna revisit some scores I hadn't listened to in a while

Don't you know people write songs about girls like you?

Janowitz - I wish I remembered exactly which piece it ripped, but I remember playing that classical piece during a saxophone lesson in grade 12, and told my teacher it sounded like Godfather, and he said "Good ears, it is The Godfather". If memory serves, it cost Nino Rota an Oscar nomination for the score, because it was literally note for note.

reply

That wasn't the one I was thinking of, although maybe that is why he got withdrawn from the Oscars. I just remember playing a classical piece of music and my saxophone teacher saying it was very blatant plagarism (or homage, really) on Rota's part. Sorry, don't remember the name, it's been years.

reply

Honestly, I'd love to remember the name, because it's now bugging me too! When I go back home next week I'm gonna root through my old saxophone books and see if anything jogs the memory. It wasn't a very famous one, I do know that, because my teacher perferred us to work with songs we hadn't heard a million times before.
