A poll with filmmakers that are also music video directors.
First of all, I think one has to make at least 3 movies in order to be called a "filmmaker". Same with music videos. If you don't agree we can discuss it in this thread, but please follow the rule for this poll.
The point of this poll is to say in which of those 2 areas each director is better at. YOU CAN ONLY CHOOSE ONE.
1) David Fincher: Movies. For some reason, a lot (if not most) of his music videos don't have the visual style of his movies... or any style. Justin Timberlake's SUIT & TIE is very basic, and Madonna's VOGUE had a specific retro style rather than the one you see in FIGHT CLUB or even THE SOCIAL NETWORK. And I don't even know what he was thinking when he made Gipsy Kings' BAMBOLEO.
2) Michel Gondry: Music videos. This one is easy, since most of his movies look like long music videos (HUMAN NATURE was inspired directly by one). ETERNAL SUNSHINE is the only great movie he's made so far.
3) Spike Jonze: Music videos. Even though HER is already one of my favorite movies, it's also the only one that's visually memorable. As for his music videos... Just watch Fatboy Slim's WEAPON OF CHOICE.
4) Tarsem Singh: Music videos. He's the epitome of style over substance. I did like MIRROR MIRROR, but ironically that one wasn't very pretty to look at. I mean, the forrest looked like a set.
5) Marc Webb: Movies. I admire what he's acomplished so far with only 3 movies. 500 DAYS and T.A.S.M. could've easily sucked, but they were fun and deep. And it didn't feel like he was copying Sam Raimi and every hipster Sundance director. T.A.S.M. 2 was flawed but still decent. I really hope he does more movies outside of the franchise, because I think he can still surprise us.
Feel free to add more names to the list. And feel free to comment only on the directors you want to.
