Black directors

Seems to me that there is a severe lack of great black directors. Spike Lee is probably the most popular but I'm not a huge fan. Another great might be Steve McQueen. Albert Hughes has done some alright stuff I suppose. Other than that I'm unaware of great black film directors and I find that pretty odd. Most black directors seem to pump out gangster *beep* Tyler Perry style garbage and low end comedies.

Where is the black Stanley Kubrick or the black Andrei Tarkovsky?

I'm sure they exist. Maybe they're just not doing film. Maybe they're doing theater. Maybe they are foreign born. Maybe they just can't get Hollywood to pay them attention.

Antoine Fuqua is pretty big known Black director who dabbles in various genres. Whether The Replacement Killers or Shooter or Training Day or King Arthur or his upcoming Southpaw.

Everyone's different. I guess some are willing to do more commercial film than others.

If you want to find out where the Black Directors are, you should take a look at Shadow and Act.

There are more Black Directors out there than just Spike Lee and Tyler Perry, and they are doing more than the usual gangster/hood movies and goofball comedies.

You may also want to take a look at a couple of lists from mubi.com

…or you may want to take a look at a list on IMDB.

You will find Black Directors doing television, documentaries, foreign films, genre films, art films, and more. There are some good ones out there, but we just have to dig a little deeper to find them.

Ousmane Sembene, by any standard, is a world-class director. He is Black, born in Senegal. He's created several masterpieces, including "Moolaade", "Camp De Thiaroye", "Xala" and "Mandibi". Check out his profile:
