Is Spielberg the most famous director ever?
I think so.

It's probably a close call, but I think Hitchcock might be more famous

Yes
shareNo Hitchcock is.
shareSpielberg. By far. Of course, Hitchcock is famous among film buffs, but the vast majority have not a clue of who he was. The year in which a film was released is of most importance for them, since all they care about is special effects.
Older people who were around when, say, Psycho or Vertigo were released know who Hitchcock was and might still enjoy his films. But nowadays, Jurassic Park is far more likeable for the masses than Hitchcock's most acessible films.
Also, if I was to name an older filmmaker to compete with Spielberg, it would be Chaplin. He is also more famous than Hitchcock these days.
Bangue ou plim, tanto faz.
Yeah it's between those 2

Oh, yeah, I forgot about him.
You know, it's funny that most people I personally know are aware of Chaplin as an actor, but fewer-ish of them know he was also a director. Kind of a fun thing.
Chaplin's fame doesn't come from his directing.
First Hitchcock, then Spielberg.
