Last Nights Watch..Pelisky (1999)

Pelisky / Cosy Dens (1999) Czech directed by Jan Hřebejk... Highly Recommended

An absolutely hilarious film . We have not laughed and enjoyed a comedy film so much, well probably not since the last Czech comedy we watched, The Inheritance.
This film is set from 1967 through the Prague Spring to August 68, it is a multi layered tale, coming of age, family relationships, clashing ideologies, there is also a rich and deep universal human drama element underlying the surface hilarity.
The sombre finale snap us & the characters back to a harsh reality, for the Czech people a sad dedication, the brief liberalisation during the bright Spring is now retreating back to the darkness of an authoritarian winter.

Czech Comedies, thoughts, favourites, recs?

Hi PlanetX!,I hope you had a good weekend and I want to say the I'm happy to hear that you are current taking a look at Czech movies, with the Jules Verne title being one that I'm interested in hearing about.

For Czech comedies,I last night watched a great one which reminded me a bit of 42's To Be Or Not To Be:

Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea (1977):

The whole movie is on Youtube with Eng subs:

Hi there MDF... all's well down here in OZ, enjoying your Czech raves
I concur with your high praise of TIWUASMWT, it is an absurdist gem, an unpredictable & clever satirical farce.
Are you going to take in director Polák's first film Ikarie XB-1 which has a markedly different tone?

One comedy I am trying to find with Eng subs on DVD is Marecek, Pass Me The Pen ....have you come across it?
