Then I Sentenced Them All To Death...Romania (1972)

Atunci i-am condamnat pe toţi la moarte, Then I Sentenced Them All to Death (1972) Romanian, directed by Sergiu Nicolaescu...

When a German soldier is found murdered on the outskirts of the local village the occupying officer declares all villagers holding important positions will be shot unless the culprit is brought forward in 24hrs.
The village intellectuals invite the simple minded Ipu (Amza Pellea) considered the "village idiot" to a lavish feast so they can soften him up for the sacrifice they will request from him. Their desperation flows into promises to Ipu, for a heroes funeral and financial benefits to his family for a brief instance Ipu is in a position of power.
A brilliant multi layered tale, profound, at times playful, creatively shot in vivid colour with outstanding performances.

Sergiu Nicolaescu was a prolific Romanian director, writer & actor, who had a career spanning 55 years. He filmed many grand historical epics Mihai Viteazul was released internationally. Nicolaescu remains the most popular and respected film maker in his homeland today.
