"Life is not a whipped-cream cake"
A tanú , The Witness (1969) Hungarian, Director, writer Péter Bacsó
Following the life of an ordinary man, dike keeper & single father Pelikán, this brilliant & daring political satire reveals the objectionable nature of the corrupt and incompetent regime that ruled Hungary in the 1950's.
In an already tense political environment it is surprising that the film was financed and allowed to be made by the communist authorities, but it was subsequently banned from release and not seen for years later.
User reviews from our fellow IMDb members in Hungary in particular szpierre give a valuable insight to the background reality on which the film is based.
Zoltán Fábri who directed the marvellous 1956 film Körhinta is among a cast of non-professional actors chosen especially by Bacsó to play the characters in what is probably the best political satire on film.
